christmas eve menu suggestions

Hi ladies! we have decided NOT to travel this Christmas (YAY!) and so we invited my dad & his girlfriend over for christmas eve. we want to have some food set out but not a formal dinner-the two of them only graze and never really eat. So what would you serve as far as drinks and light fare? Looking for some inspiration. Thanks!

Re: christmas eve menu suggestions

  • A couple of things I do that don't get mentioned around here much are:

    stuffed mushrooms

    drief beef cheeseball

my family is also a huge fan of lil' smokies in the crockpot with diced jalepenos and sweet baby ray's bbq sauce

The negative with the stuffed mushrooms is that they cool off really fast. But, I don't mind eating them less hot.

  • Stuffed mushrooms are so good!

There's always meatballs in the crockpot - that's nice and easy AND tasty.

Cheese and crackers, or baked brie and crackers/baguette.

DH's family always has sliced kielbasa with brown sugar. It's so good and super easy.

You could also do ham and cheese croissants.

  • We usually do all apps on Christmas Eve too. Some of my faves:

    • Round of gouda wrapped in crescent dough
    •  Meatballs with the sweet chili sauce
    • Bisquick sausage cheese balls
    • Pigs in a blanket
  • pigs in a blanket are so good.

We have done a Christmas Eve dinner in the past, but it was seated.  We did a bourbon glazed salmon w/ spinach and aspargus risotto and salad of some kind.

  • We always have shrimp newburg on Christmas Eve (bc its super easy to throw together, so we'd have it before or after Mass) but that's obviously a sit-down thing.

I love something like cream of crab soup in the crock pot (we make it on the stove and put it in the crock pot to keep warm) - it is decadent enough to feel special and you don't have to pig out on it bc it can be pretty rich.

Cheese and antipasto platters are always good.

I love stuffed mushrooms - I agree they're better hot but they're still good as they cool off, and they can be pretty filling.

Little mini quiches could be yummy too.

  • Well, growing up, my family had hot dogs, baked beans, fruit salad, chips, and hot chocolate. That doesn't help, does it? My husband refuses to follow tradition until we have kids, so he and I have a spread of shrimp cocktail, fondue, grapes, cheese and crackers, and wine.
