Newborns and higher altitudes?

I remember a discussion about this a while back, but what is the pedi recommendation about taking newborns up to the mountains?

I read a study that said it is not a good idea until 3 months for various reasons, but I assume they were studying babies born at sea level versus here in Denver.

I am just wondering if we would be able to go to a mini-reunion being planned for next July in Steamboat Springs. Baby #2 will be about 6 weeks old.

Re: Newborns and higher altitudes?

  • My ped wasn't concerned.  I lived in Denver, commuted to Evergreen (about 8-9,000 ft above msl) throughout my whole pregnancy and took DS#1 and DS#2 on vacations with family to the mountains (Estes and over to Vail) when both were about 3-10 weeks old.  No problem for us and as I said, our ped wasn't at all concerned.

Are you united with the CCOKCs?

  • We took DS up to Breck quite a bit when he was a newborn and had no problems.  Our pedi said it was fine.

  • I think there is more concern over flatlander babies then mile high babies.
  • We took #2 to Steamboat when he was barely 4 weeks old.  He did great.

DS #3 diagnosed at birth with panhypopituitarism - lack of pituitary function. He is treated with thyroxine, hydrocortisone, growth hormone and testosterone.

  • If they are born in Denver, etc (ie altitude) then going to the mountains are fine. We took Finn to RMNP and other high altitudes from 4 weeks on. He's relatively normal :) My pedi said it was fine.

  • Ditto everyone else. DS spent several weekends a month at Winter Park last ski season, starting at about 4 months old!
