alterations

I took a dress to a tailor yesterday to get it taken in. She told me it would be $15 (I have no idea if that's a good price or not since my wedding dress was the last thing I had altered.) Anyway, after she pinned it, I still thought it was too loose, so I asked her to do it tighter. She said ok and added an extra pin. Her English wasn't the best, but we managed.

Here's what I'm wondering: when I pick it up next week, if I still think it's too loose, do I complain? Would she offer to redo it free of charge, or do I pay again if she has to do it again? The dress was worth paying $15 once, but not really any more than that. I just wanted to be prepared with what to expect just in case. Hopefully this is a nonissue and it will turn out great.

Re: alterations

  • The only times I've had things altered have been for weddings...my wedding dress, or BM's dresses and in any of those instances if it didn't fit they would fix it for free. Now those alterations were obviously more than $15, but it's her job to make sure it fits you. If it doesn't, she hasn't really done her job. I would definitely (nicely obviously) say something if you're not happy with the fit.

  • Remember that when she puts in through the machine, the seams will pull it tighter and the fabric will usually draw in.

I had a dress fitted yesterday, its a BM dress, but its a lot like a regular dress and I felt the same way.  The machine always pulls it tight though.
