Present ideas for kids to buy/make?

We have a big family and my oldest son wants to buy his own present or make something for everyone.  It comes out to about 21 gifts to buy or make (4 grandparents, 5 aunts/uncles, 1 brother, 6 kids, and 5 friends).

Any ideas of something cheap and easy that we could make (not food) for everyone so they have the same present (or variations on that present)?

  • Ornaments? I saw one where they did a handprint on a ball ornament and then painted the fingers into snowmen.  It was really cute.  Or you can get clear balls and put paint and glitter inside.
  • A christmas ornament?  You could get those clear glass balls and fill them with "stuff".  Sequence, pictures from magazines, pipe cleaners, colored cotton balls, whatever you find.  I'm sure there are tons of other ornament ideas online.

Bookmarks?  Take a piece of construction paper or poster board and have him draw or cut out letters from old magzines to spell the person's name and help him laminate them.

  • What about magnets?  I have made magnets where you cut out a picture in a circle to fit over the magnet, then glue a clear flat marble on top.  They're cute, easy, cheap.

    Here's an example.

  • Last year James and I made birdseed pinecone ornaments to hang outside. We just covered pinecones with suet (rendered beef fat) and then rolled them in peanut bits. You could easily modify this with peanut butter and birdseed, or use crisco. The reason for using fatty stuff is that birds crave that in the winter.

  • We did picture frames before.  Buy plain or basic frames with larger "sides" at thrift stores, or clearance somewhere.

The boys painted them, glued things to them, and decorated the crap out of them.  Then we covered anything necessary with a thinned-out Modge Podge mix (about 1/2 water, 1/2 MP) and they turned out great.

  • Last year we did ornaments (small wooden shapes at Michaels, DD painted, I glued ribbon to the back).  This year we did picture frames ($1 for 4x6 wooden frame at Michaels, DD painted, I put in a pic of her).

  • Great ideas - I'm going to look into these tonight!

I'm missing Hobby Lobby and Micheals a little this year...  Our local craft store is way more expensive - wooden frames were $2.50 each undecorated.  We do have JoAnns so maybe I could find some deals on crafty-stuff out there.

  • What about homemade playdoh for the kids? You can do different colors, add gliiter, extracts, etc. I made candy cane playdoh for Addison. White playdoh with red glitter and a peppermint smell. It has been a huge hit. Also, we are making button wreath ornaments for her aunts, uncles, etc. Floral wire, buttons, and ribbon. Although, buttons can be kind of expensive. We also made aprons for the grandmas. I just bought a basic canvas apron from the craft store and gave Addison a box of fabric markers to decorate. They turned out pretty cute.
