Has anyone taken an Alaskan cruise?
We have 2 weeks of vacation in the end of April. Is that a good time to visit? What cruise line did you take and what was your departure city? Which excursions were worth it? And what was the total cost of the entire trip?
Re: Has anyone taken an Alaskan cruise?
We went this past fall. We took a 1 week cruise on Holland America that departed Vancouver and went to Serward, AK. Then we spent the next week driving ourselves around Alaska. The cruise was around $1,000 each person. I absolutely loved the Holland America line. There were only a few people our own age but we still had a bunch of fun with the "older crowd".
We only did one excursion in Skagway. The Yukon railroad which was definitely worth it. The other ports we just explored the city.
I wrote up a review for each day of our vacation on my blog under Alaska.
you may want to even check if cruise lines go to alaska in april. i think most only go may-sept.
that said, i cruised alaska in july 2004 on royal caribbean. it was the perfect time to go imo, it was warm enough to hang out on deck some days but still really cold at glacier bay.
we did a kayaking exerusion and the rail excursion the pp mentioned. they were both worth it.
have no idea on the cost b/c the trip was a gift for graduating grad school, plus it was 7 years ago!
No...but I'd like to. Check the dates, when I looked into it last year for us, there weren't any cruises available before May 1st.
Also go to the site cruisecritic.com...those people know EVERYTHING about cruising!
Late April would be pretty early in the year. Do cruise lines do SE Alaska itineraries that early? Either way, it'll be close. We went in late May, and it was considered an advantage that time of year to be on a smaller ship (that would be less likely to have to turn around in a fjord because of ice).
We went on Holland America, and did round trip out of Vancouver. All of our excursions were worth it: helicopter to Mendenhall Glacier (Juneau) and ice climbing on the glacier, chartered fishing boat in Ketchikan, and White Pass RR in Skagway with mountain bike ride back down. We spent almost as much on excursions as the entire rest of the cruise though.
It was an expensive trip, with the airfare from the east coast and pricey excursions. Maybe $6k?
I went on a 10 day cruise to Alaska on Princess Cruises. We left from Seattle and stopped at (let me remember).... British Columbia, Ketchican, Skagway, Juneau, and... a few more I can't remember.
It was beautiful when we went (in June) - albeit a little chilly. I wouldn't want to go any earlier in the year than that, because I was cold the entire time, but I think it's just cold year round.
Don't remember how much we paid. Probably close to $1,100 a person.
