Just got an alert that gunshots were heard on campus. Sirens are going off everywhere. Heard at least 4-5 ambulances in the last 5 minutes (I left campus about 2 hours ago and am at work).
Please please please let this be nothing.
UPDATE 1:20 pm eastern:
Police officer confirmed shot, suspect still at large, second victim just reported.
UPDATE 1:40:
Police officer is reported dead. Sirens just picked up again, all emergency vehicles headed toward campus.

Just got this alert:
Suspect described as white male, gray sweat pants, gray hat w/neon green brim, maroon hoodie and backpack. On foot towards McComas. Call 911
I don't understand why Tech keeps having these issues. Is it something about the campus? The area? The fact that it happened there before. What's the draw?
Or is this happening near other college campuses too and we just here about it less because VATech is so on guard?
That's the earliest report on the news site but the VT Alert said the suspect is still on foot...?

I heard a crap ton of sirens go off around 1 but they wouldn't be calling cops from here would they?
News on MSN says it started because of a traffic stop, and that's when the officer was shot.

It did start with a traffic stop.
Unfortunately, I don't think the suspect is caught. As of 2:24, my VT Alert said that the suspect's status is unknown, and the police radios indicate that he may be moving by vehicle now, toward the town where I live. All county schools are on lockdown right now.
Oh, and Jaay- yeah cops are here from everywhere. Hundreds of cars. So prob. some Roanoke as well.
Press conference occurring right now says suspect is still at large.
A co-worker actually just said something about even Franklin Co. reporting to B'burg so that makes sense.
I saw you said something about him possibly being in a car. I'm hoping they've got road blocks up at places like 81.
