Rheumatologist Rec?

My PCP is referring me to a Rheumatologist based on some symptoms and test results I've had.  Anyone have a recommendation?  FC/Fairfax/Arlington preferred, but will travel a bit for someone good.

Re: Rheumatologist Rec?

  • I wish I had a great recommendation to give you - I went through 3 different rheumatologists till I found one that I think is good and not terrible.  I like Dr. Alben Goldstein in Arlington on Carlin Springs..  He's really nice and he was willing to work with me on my treatment.  (I go for on-going care, not diagnostic, and I really wanted someone who would respect my 20+ years of experience managing my arthritis).  Have you asked your referring physician for recommendations?  I had a lot of misses, but that might have been because I didn't want to be re-diagnosed, I already knew what was wrong, i just wanted help in managing it.
  • My PCP actually did recommend Dr. Goldstein, so I'm glad to hear that you are relatively happy with him.  When I googled him, he doesn't get great reviews, but I'm guessing that most people who take the time to go onto a random site to review a doctor are doing it because they are unhappy.  I think I'll give him a try.  Thanks for responding.

  • What I've hated in the past about his office is the wait.  It was just terribly managed.  A new office manager came on this year and it has gotten much, much better.  As a matter of fact, the last time I think I only waited 15-20 minutes, so much better than the hour+ waits of the past.  I also dislike that you have to pay for parking, but that goes for everywhere.  Dr. Goldstein is really nice and really kind.  He's a grandpa and it shows in all the best ways.  I think you'll like him.  I hope all is well.  Feel better.
  • Dr. Dorothy Nicholson is fantastic.  I want her to be my doctor for everything.  I almost miss having joint symptoms, just because she was that good.  (Not true, but you get the point Wink)

Here's the #1 reason why I recommend her highly:  she listens and cares like no other doctor I've had.   I tested negative, but she didn't give up on me because she listed to my story and the story painted a different picture.  She referred me at one point to a podiatrist and he called her from the appt once since her assessment was different from his.  They had a healthy professional discussion about my care and I felt like they both actually cared about my outcome.

Her office staff is nice and I never had to wait long upon arrival.  She isn't crazy booked up that you can never get an appointment, either.

She's in Alexandria, but right near 395 so very easy to get to.

I just can't say enough great things.  I'm SO glad I found her as a doc.

Thanks!  I just checked and she doesn't take my insurance, but I'll keep her info incase other options don't work out.
