Out of the box ideas for what to do in Seattle

Hey everyone, I need some really out of the box ideas of fun things to do in Seattle during the holiday season. I know a lot of the regular touristy things mentioned... but many of them won't work for my situation. Several members of my family are coming in town to visit, including my dad and step-mom who are both blind. The only other time they have visited was for our wedding, which was obviously very busy, so this will be their first time to really experience our area.

We are planning to do the underground tour, which they should appreciate since they both like history. But I'm at a loss thinking of much else. Things like riding the ducks or just going to see xmas lights (botanical gardens, etc) wouldn't be very enjoyable for them. Does anyone have any suggestions? tia!

  • We are going to the symphony.  It's not "out of the box," but maybe something good for someone who can't see.

TTC #2 for a million years: SA normal, CD 23 bloodwork shows nothing amiss, ovulation detected. Next step: ? maybe CD3 bloodwork to check eggs? All out of pocket, so limited IF tests/treatments.
  • It's been on my list for a while to go to Bellevue Square because of the Snowflake Lane thing at 7pm.  I think there's fake snow, music etc in addition to all the lights - so something maybe a little more entertaining.
  • There's outdoor ice skating on Capitol Hill this year.

  • amanda, yes, thanks, we do plan to do snowflake lane. I thought they might appreciate the drum line that usually is part of it.

niq, my step-mom broke her shoulder a year ago when she slipped and fell on regular ground... so ice skating is probably out. :o(

  • I'm stuck on food things, since that is such a strong sense... anyway here are a few ideas: wine tasting, coffee crawl (http://seattlebyfoot.com/seattle-walking-tours-coffee), one of these tours (if you can do it mid-week then the market isn't busy; http://www.savorseattletours.com/), EMP (some is visual, but other parts are experiential/audio/tactile), comedy/theater/symphony/etc.  What about the argosy christmas ship?  There is live music and i think a buffet dinner or maybe hors d'oeuvres.

Would it be appropriate to contact one of the local assistance centers (Lighthouse, etc.) for ideas?

  • You might consider going to Mulbak's in Woodinville? I love going there..they often have a Dickensian quartet singing and I would imagine they could maybe enjoy a lot of the smells of the various plants? although I guess I totally love the zillion varities of poinsettia and they don't have much smell..

  • If they are New Orleanians, they'll be happy to hang out and talk. I bet they'll love just spending time with you and your family.

Does Red Hook still have trivia nights? I don't know them... but, if you say they love history... and, you love reading... I have to come to the conclusion that y'all would win at trivia night.

You are so close to Snoqualmie Falls that I would go there. It is much more than just a visual experience. It's loud and has mist that you can feel. Since we don't have anything like that in La, it's always on the list of places to visit.

Are there any NW treats that they like? My mom always wants salmon (she doesn't care if it's copper river... or the season... it's just the novelty of getting salmon every time she's here). My BFF like dungeness crab. Do people in your family associate a particular food with our region?

  • Surfin they are New Orleans and will be just happy to hang out and talk and try all of the local food. I just want to make sure that they get to do some local stuff because we did all wedding stuff when they were here last time. We actually got married at the falls.. so that is one thing they have already visited!
