Getting rid of refrigerator smell

I don't know what happened in or fridge, but for the past week it has had a horribly bad smell that I can't get rid of. I've cleaned it out, top to bottom, washed everything, threw out anything that could be smelling and it still reeks! It's terrible. Anyone have this problem and come up with a solution?

Re: Getting rid of refrigerator smell

  • In these cases, after I've cleaned everything out, I either put a cup of white vinegar inside it over night (uncovered).  And open box of baking soda often helps too (I always leave one in my fridge & change it out a few times/year).

    good luck!

  • If soap doesn't work I usually follow up with a 1/2 water 1/2 vinegar spray and then wipe it down again.

Do you have an open box of baking soda in there?  That will absorb some smell too.

  • I wonder what the source of the smell is.  Could it be coming from your freezer or water line? Perhaps vacuum your coils (usually under the fridge).

I would wipe it down with a little bit of bleach diluted in water, and then put a box of baking soda in there to absorb odors.

  • Ugh, I hate when this happens!  In my experience, baking soda does not work.

I had to use a bleach / hot water solution.  It was the only thing that really killed the bacteria.

I totally emptied out the fridge, washed it down with the above solution and let it sit for an hour or so.  THen I washed it down with just hot water to try to disipate the bleach smell.

  • could it be spoiled BM?

you could also try cleaning w/ lemon, actually cut a lemon and rub it all over

  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I have no idea what it is. It smells like something is rotting but there is nothing in there, or the freezer, that smells bad. So, the only thing I can figure is it's a lingering smell from something that no longer exists. I'll try the vinegar thing tonight and then try and clean it out over the weekend and do the bleach/lemon idea. I'll try it all because this stench is SOOOOO unappetizing it makes me not want to eat anything. It's the worst when you first open the refrigerator door and I swear the smell wafts through the whole house. Gross. I looked up a few suggestions on Google and some of the solutions involve taking everything out and putting coffee grounds in there, but you have to leave it in there for 48 hours! I don't have coolers big enough to hold all our food! Such a pain. I wish it would just go away.

  • Did you dump out all of the ice in your icemaker and any trays?  Ice absorbs the smell and I know we rarely totally empty the ice dispenser so it could sit there for a long time.

Mmmm, this is a good suggestion. We have an automatic ice dispenser and I know we've never emptied it. I'll try that too. Thanks!
