XP from Mil Families: Housing Question (long, sorry)
This board seems to get a little more traffic than MF does on the Bump, I hope you don't mind me XP'ing over here. (Oh, and hi!)
Does anyone know if there is a maximum rent allowed under the RPP (by
pay grade)? If there is, I know it will vary by location.
We currently rent through RPP and our rent is just a few dollars less than BAH, not including utilities. Last year when we signed our lease, the woman we dealt with at the housing office gave us a heck of a time, saying how she shouldn't even let us sign the lease because the rent was so high, but she did eventually let us sign everything (and as far as I know, there was no reason we should not have been allowed to rent our place).
Now that our lease will be up in 2 months, we need to resign or relocate. Our property management has offered to let us resign with a 5% increase. This bumps our rent above our current BAH, but we can comfortably afford the rent in our budget. Will we have trouble with the housing office letting us renew our lease?

Weird. I know people whose rent is well above BAH (due to a 2nd income, usually). I don't know why you'd need to go back for a renewal of an already approved lease.
I have to admit, though, I don't know what RPP is.
Yeah, I'm not understanding this. J wasn't even here when I signed our off base lease. I didn't get anything approved.
this is what I was confused about, so I never answered. As long as you're not screwing your finances in a way that is going to effect the military, they wont care.

RPP is Rental Partnership Program. I'm guessing it's similar to the Set Aside program. Base housing and certain apartment complexes have come together and offer no deposits (besides pet), usually a discount and the rent is allotted out of H's check before we see any money.
So I guess essentially only certain apartments are 'approved'. Though, here the housing office said they would like for everyone to come in so they can review the lease/apartment whether or not they are on the RPP list.
I also know if you're E4 or below you have to have your flight chief and I think shirt sign off on the paper and go through a budgeting class (at least here).
Yep, sorry, RPP = Rental Partnership Program. It is the same as the Set Aside program I think; I've only ever known it as RPP since we were stationed here 2 years ago though. But ericandmarie explained it correctly - we had to go through the housing office to find have our rent approved and then paid by allotment. We also get a 5% discount on our rent.
The housing office has a list of apartment complexes that participate in the program. Apparently we are supposed to get all leases reviewed by the housing office, but we signed our first lease (with a different complex, not RPP) without ever dealing with them. When we moved in here last year, we wanted the RPP discount so we went through the housing office. We never had to get any sign offs from DH's higher ups or do any classes, but he is an E5 so maybe that's why.
I couldn't find anything online indicating that the military would have any say in what we pay for rent, but the woman in the housing office gave us such a hard time about it last year that I was a bit worried about having to go through it again.

Yeah, we were told we had to have ours approved but when C called housing about it they were like "wtf? You're an adult, sign the lease."
I wouldn't worry about it, OP. It's none of housing's business how much you pay per month in rent.
