cricut and other cutting machines
Can someone tell me how these machines work (mats, cartridges, etc). I am wondering what other machines are out there. I don't really like the idea of buying cartridges for everything. Is there one that you can attach to a computer or something? I really don't know much about them so any info you have is appreciated. I just keep seeing all of these crafts that I want to make that need one of these machines!

I have the Silhouette Cameo and love it! I love that you can use it without being dependant on cartridges for your images. You can use any font on your computer and can import images on your computer as well. Also, if you want to buy special images, they have an online store where the majority of the images are $.99 and they have weekly clearance sales with $.50 images and frequently have sales on all of their images.

Not many people on here have the machine I have - it is the Pazzles. It is a little more money but it does much SO more than just cut: it will emboss, engrave, pierce, distress, and write. And they just came out with a pastry tool add-on kit for cutting fondant, etc., so you don't need a separate machine like the Cricut Cake. It also has something built into the software to cut rhinestone templates for ironing hotfix stones onto fabric.
Also, their customer service is AMAZING - super friendly and fast and amazing technical support. They have a lady who runs free webcasts every Sunday and Tuesday to teach you new tricks, and a Yahoo! group that I just joined. The webcasts are archived online and I have gone to archived ones before when I am trying to figure something out.
It is not cartridge based and there are a gazillion free images out there on the internet. Its software will actually vectorize anything into a cuttable image. I've never paid a penny for an image.
I think I am the only one here who has the new KNK Zing. I absolutely LOVE it! Haven't had much time with it, but its awesome. Definately a learning curve, but the costumer support via MTC and Zing dealers is amazing. The MTC message board and the Zing yahoo group are extremely helpful and will answer any questions you have. There are even more machines out there by Klic-N-Kut and the Black Cats are also really good machines. They do cost quite a bit more money than Cricut and even the Cameo, but they are workhorses from what I've read.
@hunniapple, I don't know if you have MTC or are interested in it, but Andy just updated the plug-in for it and from what the people on the MTC message board says, is working great now.
Someone gave Andy a Cameo and once he updates the other plugins he will work on creating a plug-in for it. At the moment, you can use Cameo w/ MTC, but I don't think you can do a PnC.
