A day of joyful anticipation has turned to anguish for Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar.
At a routine check-up Thursday to find out the gender of their 20th child, their doctor was unable to find a heartbeat and told the couple they had miscarried in the second trimester.
"After the appointment, we came back home and told the
children," says Michelle, 45. "We had just been talking about baby
names last night and they were getting excited about naming a boy or a
girl. It has been a real sad disappointment."
She says the family will select a name after they know if the baby was a boy or girl, and then plan to have funeral service.
"I feel like my heart broke telling my children," says Michelle.
"They have all been so excited about this baby and looking forward to
April coming around and having a new little one in our arms. That was
the most difficult. The Lord is the giver of life and he can choose
when that life is ready to go on and be with Him."
The stars of TLC's 19 Kids and Counting previously weathered a medical ordeal with their youngest daughter, Josie, who was born in December 2009.
This was their second miscarriage; Michelle lost her baby during
her second pregnancy. She was taking oral birth control at the time and
cites this as one reason they couple together decided to leave the
number of children they have "up to God."

Completely agree.
I agree with you. Her last one was very sick and early and now this. My heart breaks for her as miscarriage is never easy.
People say this every time someone mentions the Duggars, and while I agree, it's probably not gonna happen. They've been clear from the get-go that they don't believe that it's up to them.

that's not super uncommon. But I think she said in previous stories that she got pregnant on birth control, stopped the pill and miscarried. She felt like she caused it.
I agree. I'm hopeful that the end is in sight, at least within the next three years or so.

because birth control pills don't just keep you from ovulating, they also make your uterine lining thinner, so even if something happens and your egg gets fertilized, it makes your uterus an inhospitable environment.

They are not going to stop (or prevent) having children as it goes against their beliefs. I imagine that that do not see this miscarriage as her body saying "enough" but as God deciding they should not have this particular child.
A second trimester miscarriage has to be hugely devastating. Especially since the whole world is watching (and waiting to say "I told you so"). I agree that their baby-making days should have been over long ago, but this is so sad to hear.
I don't believe they use birth control pills because of their religion. I read that somewhere. I think she should have her tubes tied though or her husband should get a vasectomy. They have enough kids now!!

Part of the religion is to let God do as it sees fit. Having a vasectomy/tubal ligation is blocking what COULD be in Gods plans. They will never do that.
How is this even news? Her uterus is her business. And TLC's.
I want a show when I have kids. Isn't that how it works? Get pregnant and get a semi-popular show on TLC?
my guess is between 16 and 20, if they found out during their anatomy scan/gender check.

I agree with everyone that "enough is enough" but know they won't because of their beliefs.
Honestly, if you want that many kids PLEASE, oh PLEASE, just adopt. You obviously can handle your own sports team of children and there are so many children out there waiting for good homes.
DH and I would love to have a big home of children, but only plan to have (hopefully) 2 naturally and the rest we'll (hopefully) adopt.
Regardless, this is their belief system. To each his own.
Maybe a vasectomy is in God's plan?
I also agree. All those kids could easily lose their mother to a pg complication. It's kind of sad.
I do agree that this is incredibly sad and that they probably won't stop. I just wish they would.
Cause then that TLC paycheck would go away. And I truly don't believe this will be her last pregnancy. They'll be doing this until she goes through menopause.
The whole 'let God decide how many kids we have' sentiment is so ridiculous. I roll my eyes every time I hear someone say it about the Duggars or anyone.
I think the Duggars are idiots. God (um sorry Nature) starts making pregnancy harder and harder the more children you have as well as the older you get. There are signs all around them. The body's ability to GET pregnant isn't the only "sign" around saying it's the right or wrong thing to do.
Of course in general it's sad to lose a baby but I don't feel particularly bad for them.
