Moving to Houston

DH has gotten a conditional job offer (he needs to pass their background check and will have no problem doing so) from a company in the 77072 zip code of Houston. We are both from Dallas and are not familiar with Houston at all, so I need some help figuring out where to live.

From what I've seen online traffic is not great (although not as bad as when we were in LA) so you want to live moderately close to work. We will be renting for a year or two so we can pay off my car and learn what part of Houston we want to settle down in. I am a yoga teacher so I would like to live in a part of town that has more gyms/yoga studios. From looking online Missouri City seems ok and I like Sugarland. Any other suggestions?

 TIA!

Re: Moving to Houston

  • Sugar Land and Missouri City are nice.  From the looks of it, he won't be working too far from the Westpark Tollway so that would make Katy convenient as well.   would probably also check out the Memorial area.

As for gyms, they are plentiful in Houston but your best bet would probably be to find somewhere closer into town to live since it seems the majority of gyms in the burbs are all big chain gyms.  I

  • Namasteak,

To preface, I want to disclose that I am a real estate professional in Houston.

What area of Dallas do you currently reside? Do you like the area (not necessarily location but amenities etc)? What do you like and dislike? Kids?

The reason I am dropping 20 questions on you is because all of this will certainly play a factor in where I would show you potential lease opportunities. There are some great, higher-end yoga studios as well as larger, box gyms in town, and your husband would have easy access to the area of town where he would potentially work.

I am not as familiar with the the Sugar Land area with regards to fitness amenities and the likes, but I am certain we could find something that suits both your professional endeavors as well as your extra-curriculars!

Feel free to email me at chris@chrisgrizzaffi.com if I can answer any more questions for you about Houston!

Thanks! I haven't looked at Memorial yet, but will take a look at apartments there tonight (since we are wanting to rent for about a year and then buy).

  • I like the Memorial area too--the portion just inside Beltway 8 is nice, and you can find some nice apartment or townhouse rentals there.

Definitely don't look in the immediate area around your husband's work.  I grew up in 77072, and while it was pretty nice back then, it's gone downhill.  There are neighborhoods in the area that are better than others (a friend lived there recently and their street was quiet and friendly), but the apartments, in general, are pretty undesirable.

Thanks for confirming what I had read online. We would like to stay under $1k/month on a rental since we want to buy in the not too distant future. Hopefully we will have time to go to Houston for mroe than a few days so we can look at neighborhoods and not just individual apartments

  • I would look in 77077 for a rental condo/townhouse. Moderate prices and nice enough hood'. There are a lot of nice looking apartments on Beltway-8 that seem decent too.

har.com is your friend! Good luck!

THank you! There is a great community in DFW called Austin Ranch (a masterplanned community with apartments, houses, shops, lots of community events). Is there anything like that in Houston in the areas we should be looking at? I won't know anyone and it would be nice to have built in, nearby activities to participate in.
