Advice on problem with photo order

Okay. I need your thoughts on this. I'm going to try to make it as brief as possible.

I use Mpix to do all of my photo printing. They always do an awesome job, and one of the main reasons I use them is because they have a preview tool for printing die-cut wallets that shows you what part of the image will appear outside the clipping area.

I took my sister-in-law's senior photos, and as part of her Christmas gift, I ordered her a ton of wallets of her favorite shots. I, of course, used the die-cut preview tool to make sure it wouldn't be clipping too closely to any important parts of the photos. Using the tool, the trimming on one photo appeared to be cutting off the very top of her head. So I added a tiny white strip at the top of the photo to essentially make it longer. The plan was that the clipping would cut off the white strip.

I uploaded the new file and checked the preview tool, and it looked perfect. Everything I needed to print was inside of the clipping lines. The white strip wasn't even close to it. So I went ahead and ordered them all.

They came today and they all look great except for the one I added the white strip to. The white strip IS inside of the clipping, so essentially on the photo. Not going to work. I emailed their customer service right away explaining the situation.

I did get a response in only 20 minutes, so I appreciate their fast service. However, the customer service rep said something along the lines of the preview tool is only a guide to assist you and cannot be relied upon. She offered to let me re-order the set and have her check it before it's printed. She also offered 50% off OR free shipping. But not both.

Do I take the offer, or do I say that's not good enough? I appreciate that they are offering me a discount, but I really don't think it's my fault that these printed incorrectly. I used the software they provided...thoughts? Am I just making a big deal out of nothing?

Kudos to you if you read this whole thing ;)

*EDIT* I just double checked the verbage on the preview tool. It says, "Please ensure all text, hands, feet, and heads fall within the safe area to prevent incorrect trimming." That's it. Nothing like this is only an estimate or anything.

  • I would thank her for her offer, but ask to speak to a manager.  The manager would probably offer to re-do them for you, or if not is more likely to do so if you ask.  I think often times customer service reps have their hands tied as to what they can offer, but managers have more flexibility.  Most people just don't take the time to ask. :-)

  • I would not settle with their offer. Based on what the preview tool stated, it would lead someone to believe that they would HAVE to make the changes you did, so their pictures would print correctly.  Like you said, nowhere on there did it state it was just a guide.  I don't think the fault is with you at all.  Their program led you to believe you had to make those changes, and in doing so, they printed your photos incorrectly.  I would also ask to speak with a manager.  I would let them know that you have ordered from them many times before, and would love to do so in the future, but if they can not correct their error, you will have to take your business elsewhere.
