How soon after you put in a resume and application
do you start with follow up calls? I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm putting in applications all over the place at various types of jobs and I'm getting nothing. I'm starting to get really depressed and being the only breadwinner is putting a toll on DH.
Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Also if you happen to have any job openings...

Re: How soon after you put in a resume and application
I've never followed up after submitting a resume, I think if they are interested and you portrayed yourself well in your cover letter and resume then they will contact you. What I try to do is make connections at the employer - check linkedin to see if I have any common links with anyone who works there, etc. Then ask to be introduced and see if they can do anything for me.
Have you taken a good look at your cover letters and resumes? Are you putting key words from the listing in your resume?
Unfortunately, if you are applying online, they do not provide a whole lot of information. Some even go to the extent of asking for no followups or an email responding to your post, saying that they will contact you, only if you're application is being considered.
If you do have their contact information or it is posted, it would never hurt to call, in my opinion. As a general rule, i think a follow up call would be made in between 1 and 2 weeks after applying. I know of some employers who find follow-up calls annoying, but I know of more who don't mind it because they have so many resumes to go through and it gives them a chance to give you a second look.
My husband has gone through this many times, so we've come to be very familiar with this. There were so many jobs out there that people were either telling him he was over or underqualified. so frustrating! He wasn't even going to apply to his current job because he thought it was out of his reach! Sometimes we feel like its the luck of the draw...
Keep applying and believe it will happen soon! positive energy makes a world of difference as corny as it sounds... i know it can be hard but dont let it get you down. good luck!
When I was applying to retail stores back in high school, I usually gave it about two weeks before I started making follow-up calls. I haven't made any since I got into the corporate world. In general, I've found that they don't like follow up calls. Sometimes I never hear anything from a company and other times it can take several months before they contact you. Just last week I had an interview for a position I applied for this past summer.
Good luck!
