Need gift suggestions

When I asked my mother if she and my step-dad had wish lists, she responded, "We just want your time." Ok, hate on me, but UGH. I can only handle my mother in TINY doses without being medicated (booze or pills, anything!). They came up for last year when all I wanted was my first married Christmas alone with my hubby. I am NOT having them up this year! In truth, my mom has too much junk (she borderline hoards) so I don't really want to get her things and experiences aren't so easy because they're in small-town Oregon.

So...I thought perhaps food. Trouble is, my mom is already borderline diabetic and still eats practically nothing but sugar. I was thinking perhaps fruit or some other healthier thing besides candy and refined sugar sweets. Any suggestions of other companies besides Swiss Colony, Harry & David, or Chukar Cherries?

  • Edible arrangements?

  • I've got the fruit ones from Harry & David. Maybe make or buy a basket with Seattle things? I did that once for my brother. You can pick and choose so things aren't too bad for her. I remember my dad once getting a tin of pecans (from Georgia?) that were great and that would be good for a diabetic.
  • What about something like a webcam so she can "spend time with you" over the internet... in small, distant doses?
Or is there something that might make activity easier for her (gloves/hat/etc. that are good for wearing while active in cold weather)?  Or a pedometer, maybe (or other gadget to make exercise more interesting, since activity plays a big role in not crossing the threshold between prediabetic and diabetic.
    Digital music/digital music player?  E-reader?
I know you said no Harry&David/similar, but what about a fruit-of-the-month club?  (Or maybe that's exactly what you were referring to...)
    Pedicure/foot creams/etc.
    Massage?

  • Are there any CSA's like Full Circle anywhere near where she lives? A few months of fresh produce delivery might be a nice gift that would encourage healthy eating.

Otherwise, ditto PPs - maybe something like an e-reader? I like the idea of a pedicure or massage too, if those services are available in her town.

I hear you on the small, distant doses thing :) Good luck and hope you get to enjoy a nice, quiet Christmas with your H this year!

  • I think the webcam is a really good idea if she will use it. I've also sent flowers to my mom in the past.. who sounds similar to your mom.

  • Made in Washington makes decent gift baskets.  Even though she already lives in the PNW, she might still enjoy some of the PNW healthier flavors.

this is a really good idea! and maybe in addition to this, a giftcard to bestbuy or something for their geeksquad to set it up for her...i know my parents wouldn't be able to do it on their own.....this way you still don't have to go physically to her house.

  • They have a webcam...LOL, I don't even like talking to her on the phone, it's so frustrating. (And it's not "talking", it's sitting there being talked AT for 2 hours about gossip about people I don't care about).

I doubt if there's a CSA in their area, they just don't have all these "big city" things in south coastal Oregon. No farmers markets either (the one we had in town closed when I was in junior high).

  • Oh, and to clarify, I was just wondering if anyone knew of OTHER companies besides the ones I listed where I could get a fruit basket from.I just wasn't bowled over by the offerings I saw as apples and oranges are rather lame to me.  :) (LOL Sarack at edible arrangements! Now I know what to get you in the future!)
