How do you mull wine?

I have a crockpot and mulling spices.  The directions on the can of spices say to put some of the spice in a cheesecloth and simmer them in the wine.  Is there another way instead of using a cheesecloth?

Re: How do you mull wine?

  • Do you have coffee filters?  If so, tie some up in a coffee filter.

Or, a tea infuser will work, too... but, a small tea infuser probably won't hold enough spice.

  • This may be a stupid question, but what do you use to tie it up?  I just keep thinking about Bridget Jones' Diary where the blue string she used turned the soup blue.
  • You could use one of these!
  • i have a mulling spice ball (essentially a big tea strainer) but i've also just mulled the spices in the wine and poured over a collander to get rid of the spices.

  • Also, another stupid question as I've never used a crockpot before:

How long does it generally take a crockpot to bring a liquid to simmer?  I know the theory of crockpots is heating something up slowly for a long period of time.  Should I start this all 2 hours before the party?  It says to simmer for 20 minutes...

Depends on how much liquid.  I'd probably leave it on 2-4 hours so that the wine has a chance not only to get warm but also to pick up the flavors of the mulling spices.

  • my friend left her mulled wine in her crockpot all day (on low) and discarded the spices after several hours - if at all, had too much mulled wine to remember ;)

  • Ok, so put it on about 4 hours in advance (for probably about 4 bottles of wine) and I can leave the spices in the whole time? Sounds so easy!  My crockpot has 3 settings: low, high, auto.  What temp would you recommend?

For those of you who have had mulled wine...the heat doesn't burn off the alcohol, does it?

  • i would do low

the heat definitely does not burn off all the alcohol. i was pretty toasted at my friend's house that thanksgiving ;)

  • If you feel more comfortable, you could just staple the spices in there... staples definitely won't turn the liquid blue!  I'm not sure if there's some toxic staple glue holding the staples together, but I bet you'd be fine.  Or, use white string.  :)  I think plain cotton string should work fine.  Or, yarn or thread.

Don't worry, the alcohol won't burn off.  :)

  • I don't know if it makes a difference, but when I make mulled cider, I bring it to a boil, then turn back the heat and simmer for an hour.

(don't ask me why, but it's my mom's recipe and it's delicious)

also, I use a spice ball now for the mulling spices, it's a less fancy version of this http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/floating-mulling-spice-ball/?pkey=e|spice+ball|1|best|0|1|24||1&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-buy%20more%20save%20more%20event%20-%20copy-_-

but I used to use cheese cloth and when I didn't have regular string, I just used white sewing thread...worked like a charm :-)

  • If you don't have cheesecloth or a spice ball, I would make it on the stovetop and then strain it into the crockpot right before the party and just keep it on low.  That way no one has to worry about stray peppercorns and orange peel getting into their beverage.

I use kitchen string to tie my cheesecloth pouch when I make apple cider in the crock pot.

  • Cheese cloth is pretty inexpensive and should be available in any grocery store with the kitchen tools (if you were worried about where to get it). They should also have ktichen twine in the same spot.
  • Thanks everyone!  I got some cheesecloth and some string you tie a roast with at the grocery store .  The tea balls they had there looked a little small, although when I have more time, I'll get an official mulling spice ball.

I think this will actually be easy!  I don't know why I was so nervous about messing it up.
