Carpet cleaning- wall-to-wall

I have to clean the wall-to-wall in our lower level family room. I have a friend who has one of those bissell carpet cleaners and I am hoping to borrow it.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for cleaning carpet?

We have 2 dogs and one of them has peed on the carpet, and I have been spot-treating, but it's time to do the whole thing.  I guess I need to get one of those enzyme cleaners?

Re: Carpet cleaning- wall-to-wall

  • Get some enzyme cleaner. Squirt it on the pee spots and let it dry. Once it's completely dry, then you can clean the carpet with the Bissel and regular carpet soap.

If you don't know where all of the pee spots are, get a blacklight. Urine, whether pet or human, glows like radioactive waste under a blacklight. It doesn't have to be a fancy light, any blacklight bulb (available at Target, Walmart, Lowes, etc) put into a regular table lamp with the shade removed will do just fine.

ETA: Most people will suggest you use the Bissel twice... go over the carpet once with the soap solution and then go back over it with just clean water. That way you get a good clean rinse so there's no soap residue left in the carpet.

  • Thank you!

My mom is taking DD for most of the weekend, so hopefully DH and I will be able to get this done while we only have one kid.  Thrilling use of our free time this weekend!

  • I've been meaning to do this too. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get a carpet shampooer. I had white carpet and two dogs. Now I have brown carpet.
