Activities during "grownup" holiday parties?

We're having a holiday party in two weeks and expecting about 20-25 people where most of the guests only know me and DH and possibly one other couple. Does anyone know any fun games, icebreakers, or activities to keep people entertained other than the typical gift exchange/dirty santa? (sorry if this was posted recently, I just didn't have time to scroll)

  • Um, cocktails?

I haven't been to a party in a while where there have been icebreakers or games. But booze is always a good social lubricant Big Smile Drinks

  • Definitely, booze.

IMO, an icebreaker will make the party more awkward.

Set out the bar, put some Christmas carols on in the background, and let everyone mingle.

  • I have a really great holiday game where you can mingle and play at the same time. It's been a huge hit at all of the parties where we've played it. Send me an email and I'll email the game to you. I'm vtkendra at hotmail.

  • I think you could set out some things, but nothing formal and organized.  Like a box of those ponderous questions.
  • I'm having the same conundrum. I mentioned the white elephant gift exchange to my husband and he looked at me like I was from another planet! I was thinking of having the game where you put a name of a famous person on someone's back and they have to guess who it was. I was going to do holiday-ish themed ones like Rudolph, Santa, Elf, Gingerbread man, etc. I can let you know how that pans out after this weekend!
  • I seriously wouldn't worry about it. There is one party we go to where they often play "Celebrity" (I'm sure you can look up directions online). Some people love it but DH and I hate it. I honestly only like games like that with people I already know well.

In addition to booze and festive music, we've been to parties where they also have a holiday movie playing in the background (like Elf or Scrooged). That's nice because it gives people something to talk about without being the main focus.

I tend to agree with this.  In my opinion, forced mingling makes parties more awkward.  If they are all adults, they should be able to figure out how to socialize with each other.  Just introduce people who don't know each other, and tell a little tid bit about them in the introduction.  Then leave them at it to make small talk.  I think games really only work among people who are already acquainted.
