Did I hear this correctly?

I swear flipping through channels last night, I heard Rick Perry say, "How is it that it is okay for a gay man to serve openly in the military, but a child can't openly celebrate Christmas?"

WHUT!?!

Just ignoring the first part of that sentence for a moment, the last time I checked, the vast majority of this entire country celebrates Christmas: Christians, Jews, Atheists, Agnostics, Other. And they all do it quite openly. Clearly this man never turns on a TV or leaves his house because he is living in a state of delusion.

Am I wrong?

  • I feel like unless you live in an isolated community, you couldn't avoid Christmas if you tried. Whether you like it or not, it's pretty much shoved down our throats.

  • Ummm. WTF?

People like that make me embarrassed to admit several things about myself - religious beliefs and political leanings, specifically - because they cast such a ridiculously negative light on the whole sphere of Christianity and conservatism. And sadly there are a lot of people who think that way.

  • Unfortunately you heard it correctly. I have no idea where this delusional "war on Christmas" came from.

  • It is just a disgusting ad all around.  I do not celebrate Christmas but appreciate the fact that we have freedom of religion in this country.  Did he miss the freedom of religion thing?  Obviously, he doesn't care about the gay vote or the nonChristian vote.

Edited to fix a spelling error.

  • This reminds me of those bumper stickers that say "Keep the Christ in Christmas".  I want to hit a car every time I see that thing.

Either that or I want a bumper sticker that says, "Keep the pagan in Yule"

    Do it!

I don't really care about bumper stickers honestly. If they want to put that on their car and they believe it then that is their deal. What gets me is when people want to take that line of thought and push it on other people. I am a Christian and celebrate Christmas-- but do I think everyone has to? Not at all.

What I do disagree with though is when people try to get hyper-PC about Christmas song lyrics. If the song was written to praise Christ or Christmas then it should be left alone, IMHO. I think if people putting together Children's pageants or holiday shows for public schools or something else like that want to go more of a secular route then ok, but don't go changing a song that is a classic. Find something else for the kids to sing if you are worried about it or do a multicultural holiday celebration and include songs from many faiths.

I don't agree with this "war on christmas" stuff, but I do think that some of the attempts to secularize Christmas can be a little bit overboard. I feel the same way about the crazy Christians that get their panties in a twist about Santa.

There's a teacher here who changed the words in a Christmas song from "don we now our gay apparel" to "don we now our bright apparel". Because you know, it's not cool to say gay!

Not really related but oh well lol.

Thank you for being sane.  I think a lot of my anger over that particular bumper sticker is that a woman I used to work with had one and she made a point to loudly declare how wrong it was for people to send cards that say Happy Holidays and not Merry Christmas because this is the time to celebrate Christ's birth and blah blah blah.  She actually got offended if you said "happy holidays" to her.  It's like, fine lady, I hope you have a Merry Christmas, but I hope your Thanksgiving and New Year's SUCK.

  • Some Christians only feel like Christians if they're being persecuted.  Hence, the made-up War on Christmas.
    This is my siggy.

    LOL!

I think it was some time in elementary school when I realized that everyone doesn't celebrate Christmas like I do. Which is why Happy Holidays has never bothered me. Its a catch all that is quick and easy to say. If you have an awesome memory & can remember all your friends of different faiths you can wish them all their Happy *insert other holiday here*. Why the heck people want to MAKE others celebrate something they don't believe in is up to me.

My housemate is pagan. We celebrate Yule, Samhain (Halloween), The Beltane Fires etc. I figure a party is a party-- I bring punch and STFU. If he ever wants to convert or has questions then I'm all ears, but until then its all good. I don't condemn him and he tries really hard not to roll his eyes at any of the crazy bible thumpers that come around.

It drove me INSANE on the phones (when I worked at my old job) when people would try to end the call with Merry Christmas or God Bless-- not because I don't believe or endorse either one, but because our calls were recorded and you could get into a shyt-hole waist deep if you got caught saying Merry Christmas or something overtly religious. It was always Thank you & if I thought I could get away with it, "Happy Holidays to you too sir/ma'am".

I did have the occasional crackpot who wanted to interrogate me about my religion which I found very funny. "Sir, we are talking about your refrigerator here. My religious beliefs are absolutely irrelevant."

I loathe all religious/belief system extremists that get pushy. Blech.

  • There's very core problem here, Mud. You're expecting Rick Perry to make sense. Whenever he talks I just pretend that I'm watching an old episode of South Park.
