We had a problem with our dishwasher not working properly a few months back. We discovered that the detergent tabs were expired so we opened a new box and things were fine. Until a few weeks ago when we noticed that all the plates and utensils and glasses had a lot of residue on them. You can feel it on the plates (not so easy to see since they are white) and see it clearly on the cloudy glasses and smudged looking utensils.
I tried running a cycle with vinegar and then put dishes back in and we still have the same problem. We live in a townhouse and checked - there is plenty of salt in the water softener so it doesn't seem to be hard water.
Any ideas or suggestions? The washer is only about 4 years old...

Try this...
Load up the dishwasher as usual.
Put the soap in the cup like you typically would.
Add about half a cup of distilled white vinegar right before you turn it on. You can put the vinegar anywhere... I just dump it in the bottom.
Most states have removed the phosphates from dishwasher detergent (excess phosphates were being dumped into the waterways with the treated sewage which caused algae overgrowth, too much algae makes it difficult for aquatic species to survive). The phosphates was what allowed for the nice shiny finish on your dishes. The vinegar does the same thing, but it won't cause irreparable harm to the ecosystem.
I add the vinegar to every washload and I no longer have the weird stuff left behind on my dishes.

Is the rinse aid dispenser empty? If it is full, is it dispensing properly?.
I was having a problem with my dishwasher and discovered that there is not enough phophurous (sp) in the detergent. Bought Lemi Shine at the grocery store (also can get it at Wal-Mart) and ran a couple of empty cycles with it and it cleans much better now. I use the powdered detergent and put about 1/4 tsp of lemi shine in every load and my dishes are amazingly clean again!
You may think it crazy but this works. Once a month to once a season, fill the detergent/rinse aid containers with powdered lemonade mix and run an empty hot water cycle.
Residue from the detergent gets/aid caked on the pipes. The acidity from the lemonade mix will rinse away the caked on pipes. Hot water rinses better than cold.
We use it once a season in a household with two adults. My SIL/B who have three kids run their dishwasher more frequently and use it once a month.
