Punta Cana?

Anyone been? Can you tell me what it's like? Thinking about going in April. Likes/dislikes? TIA!

Re: Punta Cana?

  • MH and I went there for our honeymoon and LOVED IT.  There was lots to do--we spend some time on the go (zip-lining and exploring the courty via a tour) and also spent time on the beach and at the pool.

We stayed at Excellence Punta Can which is AI and AO.

  • We also went to Excellence PC for our honeymoon. I can't recommend it enough! We loved it.

  • We loved the area...can't beat it!  We also went in April for our 1st anniv. and it was about 90 everyday and only rained 1 morning.

We stayed at the Iberostar Grand Bavaro..it was nice,  but wasn't worth the price tag.  Everyone I talked to who stayed at the Excellence LOVED it.

  • We went this past April and I wrote about it on my blog (below). We stayed at Iberostar Punta Cana which is the lower than the Bavaro and the Grand Iberostar's there. I was looking for a cheap fast getaway and we liked it, although the hotel did show some older wear. If I did it again, I would have stayed in the Bavaro or Grand Iberostar or a totally different hotel (not IB). But, we really liked Punta Cana and one day we walked an hour straight down the beach and got to look at a lot of the other hotels, it was really pretty.
  • My impression of Punta Cana was that there wasn't much to it aside from airports and resort after resort.  If you're looking to stay at a resort and not really leave the grounds the entire time, then it's great for that - the beach front is very nice (although I thought Turks & Caicos was more impressive) and we had great weather all week.  If you're looking to do a lot of activities nearby or get a feel for local culture, then it's probably not the best destination for you.

  • DH and I went there for our honeymoon as well and loved it! We stayed at the Majestic Elegance. The beaches are gorgeous and if you are looking for a relaxing beach/pool vacation it is perfect. We did a couple excursions which were a ton of fun but other than those, there is not much to do. We had a blast relaxing, eating and drinking though :)

Yes, I would agree with this too. It's a great place to go if you want an AI resort vacation.

  • I personally disliked Punta Cana for the following reasons:

    1) All the tours were mediocre compared to ones I had done in Mexico, Cuba, St.Maarten, Turks, etc. Like the snorkelling was sub-par; the 'city tours' seemed very contrived, etc.

    2) Both Dh and I got food poisoning (and I eat street meat in Mexico, so I'm not paranoid, nor do I often get sick).

    3) There isn't much nightlife or restaurants off-resort.

I think it would be a fine destination for people who don't really leave the resort. The weather is great and the beaches are fabulous.

  • I went to Punta Cana with DH, my BIL and his wife last March and we had a great time.  We stayed at the Iberostar. It was OK, the rooms were kind of worn (but clean, so that's all I really cared about) and the food wasn't the greatest, but the beach was awesome and the staff was super nice and friendly.  We never left the resort but that was fine with me, they had a lot of activities going on there like beach volleyball tournaments, water sports, dance classes, etc. Plus I was happy to just sit on the beach with an El Presidente and my book!
  • I have to agree with some others- I loved it for it's all inclusive-ness (we stayed at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro- the adults only side of a bigger resort- and loved it a lot, beautiful and inexpensive), but I really regret that I didn't get to experience any of the culture. We only left the resort once on a group tour, and while we had a good time, I just prefer to be able to leave and do whatever I want. So I guess it depends what you're looking for. The beaches are phenomenal and everyone we met was nice, but then again they were all in the hospitality industry :)

  • We just returned from Punta Cana and stayed in the Elegance Club at Majestic Elegance. We loved it.  The beaches were great, the weather was awesome, a few rain showers here and there, but they passed quickly.

I did find there were enough excursions, and things to do to "get the vibe" of the land.  We did the Dune Boogies tour, and it was AWESOME. Best vacation experience, ever.

I will say, I wished the water was a little prettier :) Since its on the Atlantic side, its more blue, not that gorgeous Caribbean aqua blue. If you go, I highly suggest the Majestic, the pools are great, beach was too! For sure do Elegance Club!
