Hey all I know a lot of you volunteer so I need some input. I just got started with a new organization I'm really excited and want to make a good impression. They asked me to volunteer at their holiday party tonight and I told them yes. They were really excited because some volunteers had cancelled.
Fast forward to today and I feel pretty sick. I'm still able to work, but it's not comfortable. Body aches, yucky tummy, headache. I'm concerned I might get worse and don't want to flake out at the very last minute. I also feel bad about flaking out considering it's my first impression with these people, but I don't want to get other sick and I would be serving food. I could probably suck it up and make it through though.
Thoughts? Would I look like a total flake and jeopardize opportunities in the future? Or do you think they will understand given the season?
Re: NSOR: WWYD Volunteer
What if you show up and tell them that you're feeling crappy and maybe they can put you on some other activity? Maybe call ahead first?
Haha, all 2 of them. What are you going to do? How are you feeling?
I think I'm just going to cancel. I really feel awful and now I have a runny nose which is gross and I definitely shouldn't be around food. I'll just be extra awesome at the next volunteer activity. I was just going to be a filler anyways so I hope I'm not putting them out too much.
Smart. It's never a good idea to infect people if you're not getting paid to do it
What kind of organization is it?
Just emailed the coordinator and phew, she was super nice about it all.
The organization works with underserved populations on fixed incomes. They provide a variety of resources such as housing and job placement services. I'm specifically going to be teaching cooking classes demonstrating healthy/budget friendly meals using a lot of the foods they might receive in a food box.
I love cooking and have actually done quite a few demos for various things so it's a really good fit for me.
