co nestie buddies I need an opinion on my nephews

Ok so long story short my brother and his wife have been neglecting their kids( 2 1/2 and 6 months old). Social services states its a marginal case so could go either way. Every chance the parents get they tell me and any1 that will listen that they want/need me to take the kids. They got into a homeless motel voucher program today via social services. SIL called me and said you have to take the kids there isnt a fridge to keep milk medicine ect cold for the kids.. umm if it were me I would be looking for a cooler or something.. I have called the case worker and their supervisor with no response. What should I do I want to care for the boys and get them in a good environment but I dont want to enable the parents and Cant afford to financially support the boys right now. I know if I get Kinship I would get $$ to pay for their care needs. But have no idea what that entails since social services # they gave me hasnt called back in 3 days. Do I just go get the kids or wait for social services???

Re: co nestie buddies I need an opinion on my nephews

  • That is tough, I read your post the other day about this situation. If you can't afford it, I would wait to hear from social services and I would offer to take them a cooler to use in the meantime.

Maybe one of the Nesties that works with social services can give you some good advice.

T&P to their family and to you!

  • Ugh.

I supposed I'd take them a cooler and if it seemed the kids would be in a bad spot, take them home for a night.

But man, what a rough spot.

Can't they just fill the sink with ice as a sort of cooler?

  • Who have you been contacting?

This page lists a contact person for kinship care in Colorado. This page provides resources and information for kinship caregivers.

I'd try reading up on that site and trying to contact that person at social services. I'd try to take them a cooler if you can and check out the place. What can't you afford right now? If you give me some specifics I might know of or be able to find a program to assist you.

ETA: If it's child care you can't afford (or the parents just need someone to take them) I'm out of school and don't go back until the middle of January. I'm in Firestone but can take them for a bit (free, of course)

I think you're doing an amazing job with this. It sounds like you're thinking with both your head and your heart at the same time which is what you need to do to stay sane. I commend you for it! It seems like your sister is making a call for help. I hope she turns things around.

    Awesome!!!

I can take them next week if you need me to. I don't have anything going on next week since I'm out of school and only have DS next week (totally free - if you can get them here or lend me car seats I can pick them up). It might not be ideal but it's an option. I have everything they'd need.

The necessities are: a place to sleep, clothes, diapers, and food.

I'm so glad you got some answers! Social services can be a PITA sometimes but I'm really happy they came through for you.

  • wow you are so generous. Could you email me so we could discuss, MelissaWiley1921@yahoo.com. I would pm you but forgot how..

Sorry I have been preparing for this and now am scatter brained...

  • Your family is so awesome for doing this!

I don't know what size the 6 month old is in and you may not need them, but I have a whole bunch of 6-9 month long sleeve shirts and pants I can give you if you want them.

  • I can help too - I'm home all week with DD with the exception of Tuesday afternoon. We're in Thornton of 120th & Holly.

I don't know if the 6 month old is a boy or girl, but I have a TON of 6-9 month little girls winter clothes. I also have fleece sleep sacks if you need them.

I'm happy to help with anything you need - just holler!

ETA: just saw your title that the kids are boys. I'm happy to go through the clothes I have and pull the gender neutral one - just let me know!

  • We've still got a pack-n-play too (although you said you already had one), and I'm sure I could go through the kids' clothes and weed out stuff to bring for them.

Also... maybe these awesome Nesties could get you a few Christmas gifts for them (not just toys per se, but stuff they can unwrap on Christmas morning?) and get them to you.  Just so they don't lose out on the holiday due to the circumstances, and it would help you out.

Please keep posting any needs you have on here - I'm sure we can all help pull stuff together to alleviate the new burden!  And you have major props from me for being so willing to help these kids... I hope the parents can get back on track at some point.

ETA:  Is the 2 1/2 yr old a boy or girl?  G just turned 3 so I know I'd have girl stuff, but I could see if we have a few things which a boy could grow into.

  • Thank you ladies for all your great thoughts and help, I completely forgot about Christmas was I so had a one track mind. Any help is always appreciated...

the 2 1/2 yr old is a boy wearing a size 3t -4t, the 6 month old boy is wearing 12months. If anyone needs 12-18 month old girl clothes I have tons that I am willing to swap ect.

  • I have about a pack of size 5 diapers (target brand & huggies) if that size would work for you.
