What age do kids start showering all by themselves?

And able to wash their own hair and all that?  DH thinks around 6 years old, but I feel like it is probably a bit older, but not really sure what age.  So when do they start doing that?

Re: What age do kids start showering all by themselves?

  • I would think it would depend on the kid. I would still monitor for a while before juts leaving them all alone.

  • DD is about to turn 3, and aside from turing on and off the water, she showers on her own with no problem. She knows 1 pump of shampoo, and does a good job of rinsing and all that, soaping up, etc.

  • I know a couple of people with 3 year olds that do it. DD loves to play in the water too much, so she needs more supervision :P

    This.

We had to get my then 12 yr old Irish Spring soap so we could know for sure he was actually USING soap during the process....

    Totally depends on the kid.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • O hates showers and can't be unsupervised in the tub (b/c of the epilepsy), so we're a ways off.
  • I guess it depends on the kid but L can wash himself up. He's capable of washing his hair and body. He does one pump for his hair and then soaps up a wash cloth and cleans up. We do supervise him because he likes to use a little too much soap if we aren't paying attention.
  • We've let Bryn stay in the shower alone for about 4-5 months so from when he was almost 5.  He still prefers a bath and/or showing with one of us.  Before that, he could shower alone (we turned on/off water and still do), but he wasn't good about actually cleaning.  Micah (3) can do it now and doesn't mind soaping up and washing hair, but we have to squeeze the soap out for him.

Are you united with the CCOKCs?

  • N takes his bath by himself with the door open.  Aside from washing his hair, which I just don't think kids this age need to do every time they get in the tub, he does it all by himself.  I do help him dry off at the end though.
  • By kindergarten my boys were all doing it themselves - I'd leave the door cracked open though.  I would definitely check their hair & sometimes did an additional rinse over the sink.  As long as I gave them "fun" soap, they tended to wash themselves pretty well.

Plus, I think they were at that age where they didn't want mom to see them naked all the time.

  • Both girls will play in the shower alone, but they are both so worried about getting soap and/or water in their eyes so they aren't very good about rinsing shampoo out.  And Lucy's hair is crazy long and thick we even have a hard time rinsing it all out.  Guess we'll just let her decide when she's ready to do it.

  • K showers by herself now except for the shampoo/conditioner part.  She's getting better, but she doesn't always rinse it all the way, so I help her with that.  Otherwise, she does everything else just fine.

  • When I was about 6, I remember my mom would shower first and while she was drying off, little sister would get in (4ish?) with me and I'd help her with soap. Then mom would pull her out, and I'd wash me. By the time I was done, mom already had sister in her pjs, so she'd help me out with drying. Dad combed and braided sister's hair and then jumped in right after me while mom worked on my hair. Brothers showered in the morning.

You guys must have had a HUGE hot water heater.

  • I think I started around age 8 or 9? That seems to me when I stopped taking baths (and therefore having help to wash my hair, etc). I could be off, of course, but I remember still having baths until about 3rd grade.

  • My dd starting doing it about 6 months ago. She gets shampoo in her eyes once in awhile but has really gotten Pretty good the last couple of months. She still likes a bath once in awhile.

  • No idea but I recently read that you shouldnt let kids brush their teeth (without you doing some) until they are something like 7!!  That seemed really old to me.

Nope. Quick showers. We knew it'd get cold if we didn't hurry.. I remember my dad getting upset and just not showering if we were in too long because it was too cold.

I'm surprised I remember all of this.
