quilting sewing machine

I have been wanting to start quilting for years and spend time periodically looking through sewing machines on Craigslist since I really can't afford a new one.  What are the main features of a machine I need to have to do some quilting?  I am so confused by all this sewing machine vocabulary!  TIA

Re: quilting sewing machine

  • You don't need a machine that's fancy to quilt.  Just one that will do a straight seam will do.  If you want to get into machine quilting, a walking foot is handy.  But you buy that as an attachment, it's not built into a regular machine.  I've made oodles of quilts, and don't have an elaborate machine.

  • My old machine was an $80 Shark from Target. I got it free as a hand-me-down, but it did what I needed it to do.

  • I quilt ( straight line and free motion) on a 40 year old Kenmore. It's all metal and my repair guy has ordered me to treat it well and never give it up.

You should check with some small local repair shops. They usually have used machines and can tell you what's good.
