If you could go back, would you change your career?

If you could do it all over again, would you choose a different career?

Re: If you could go back, would you change your career?

  • No, I'd still be a teacher. But I'd find a way to get my teaching degree without going into such massive debt.

Also, if I had my way, I'd be a SAHM for the next 5 years at least. If I have to work outside the home though I don't think I'd be satisfied with any job but teaching.

  • Yes, 100%. I would not have done my MSW.

  • I did in my mid- to late-20s...went from working in marketing and research to going to school to become a therapist.  And I love my job/career, so I wouldn't change it at all.

  • I dont' have a career. I have a profession (which I don't use) but no career. I'd change that a bit somehow - I love my PhD but kind of gave up a career to emigrate and then to have babies before I was too old. I doubt I'll be able to get back into it. It'd be nice to have a career...

  • I wanted to be a mathematician from quite a young age and became an engineer instead as I knew I wouldn't be able to make a living as a mathematician. I am still in science and academia which is what I've always wanted but if I could go back I think I would choose mathematics.

On the other hand I've recently developed kind of obsession with everything that is wrong with the world (especially when it comes to children) and have been regretting not choosing a career where I can help in some way but I don't think that professions in that line suit my personality in any case...

  • Yes, I never would have gotten my law degree.  Maybe I would have gone to vet school.

  • Yes. I would have been a teacher or social worker. I work in business administration at a university. Like my job but I'm not exactly passionate about it. I do like having set hours and never bringing work home though.

  • I did abt 6yrs ago... glad I did.  That said, I don't regret the 1st job/career.  I enjoyed it, but felt top-out by 24, and that's not cool.  More opportunities for growth change in my current field.  But start up costs were high, so I'm glad I had some time to think it over & talk to others in the field before committing.

  • I don't know. Maybe.

For a while, I've kind of been thinking I should have gone into Geology instead of computer science, but it probably wouldn't have led to the same career I have now. I do wish I had an M.S. in geology both for my current job and because it would make it a heck of a lot easier to find an assignment in Antarctica (because I would be willing to take 6 months off work to do that).

  • Yep.

Other than marrying money I would go more of the speech therapist route or maybe actually talked to someone about what I would be good at as well as what would earn me money.

  • I have changed careers a few times since college already. I don't regret not having started out with what I am doing now (literary translator). I suspect that I will radically change careers again at least 1 or 2 more times in my life. It keeps things interesting for me.

  • Nope. I really liked me degree - business administration. What's funny is that there were multiple classes I didn't like on their own but liked how they all linked together. I love how the principles apply to any industry. I took a lot of extra science and math classes, and had a lot of friends in those majors, so my favorite jobs have been in positions where I bridged the gap between the techies and the non-techies. Those are the jobs I miss.

I can't say that I have a career. But I can say that I am very adaptable. That has served me very well.
