*pokes head in* Hi. I'm the new girl.

Hi! I just wanted to introduce myself. I was a bumpie for a while before we all moved over to FB, so I haven't been on any of these boards much lately...

We got the call this morning for a job offer for my BF in Germany. Mannheim, to be exact, so we'll be heading over there soon. Which means, I think, we also have to get married, but we'll worry about those details later. First, I wanted to make some friends. haha.

Any advice for a girl moving abroad?

Re: *pokes head in* Hi. I'm the new girl.

  • Hi & welcome the board :) Most of the 'european' girls won't be on until later in the day - its still night there!

I'm from Minnesota, living in Australia. My best advice - take change well and know that it will take some time to get settled in in your new country - and get skype!!

  • Hi and welcome! hope everything works out well for you with the move. My advice would be to learn German lol Is it a permanent position or temporary contract work?

  • Hi and welcome! My DH is a German and we live in Southern Germany (about 2.5 hours drive from Mannheim). If there's no concern with your husband's company (like if they wouldn't pay for you to move otherwise), then you don't need to get married just for the German authorities. If you live together then you can register as living in a civil partnership (eingetragene Lebenspartnerschaft) and then you have the same right to a partner visa as a wife would. One difference is that you have to show your bank accounts and prove you have a certain euro amount per month that you'll be here, so basically prove that you can provide for yourself. Wives don't have to do that.

I have some friends who did that, so if you need/want more details I can ask them if they remember what all it involved. It was back in 2005, so their memories might be a little foggy now! :-)

If you're happy to use this as an excuse to get married, however, then just ignore what I said above! :-)

And if you have any specific questions about Germany, feel free to PM me. There are a couple of us here on this board, some married to Germans and some here with American DHs.

  • Hi and welcome! DH and I are Americans living in Scotland for almost 6 years now. How long will you be moving for and who is paying for the move? That will definitely help us give you good advice for packing! In our situation, DH had a job and they gave him a certain amount for relocation - it covered our plane tickets over plus the charges for 7 extra suitcases so we brought almost nothing and just got what we needed over here.

    Good luck!

  • Hi and welcome.  DH and I are Americans living in London.  Congratulations to your DH on his new opportunity.  My advice would be: be open minded and flexible. Take advantage of your location and travel!

Also stick around this board, and you'll learn a lot.

  • Welcome!  DH and I are Americans living in the Netherlands.  We're here on an expat contract, so here for DH's job.  Congrats on moving abroad, this is definitely an exciting time for you!

Don't have too much to offer by way of German laws and such, but learning German is definitely a good idea.  Every time DH and I cross the boarder, we're surprised at how much we need to use German, even in the bigger cities.

Good luck, and stick around, we'd love to hear more from you!

  • Hi and Welcome to the IN Board! We're always happy to have new people join in. My DH and I are Americans in Belgium. We've been here for almost 3 years now.

I definitely agree to keep an open mind - and get excited! Germany seems like a great place to be overseas. (we go there often). Be ready for some big adjustments and get skype for sure!

Good Luck with the big move!

We're headed to the Maldives on Christmas Eve!

  • Hi. DH and I live in Chicago now. But before that we lived in Zurich, Switzerland for a year.

DH is German so we've spent time in Germany. I preferred the lifestyle in Germany vs. Switzerland. Swiss folks can be a bit standoffish. But my quality life was way better in Zurich. So we are in a Catch 22 on where to live if we needed to move back for some reason.

Take some German lessons when you arrive so you can feel more comfortable at the grocery store and while you are out and about. You can possibly find a English speaking mommy and me group in that area too. That hardest thing for me about living abroad was not making friends.

  • Hi Welcome!

I'm an American living with my Australian husband in Frankfurt. I've never been to Mannheim, but I heard it was really nice.

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • Hi and Welcpme! DH and I are Americans living in London.
  • Hi!  I live near Frankfurt with my DH and two boys.  Welcome!

Definitely start learning some German.  Basic stuff you might use in restaurants, directions, stores, etc.  Keep an open mind and expect things to be different.  Get Sunday shopping out of your system, because you can do very little (almost none) of that here.

    And have fun! :)

  • Germany--how exciting! DH and I are Americans living in London. I was through Mannheim en route to Heidelberg last summer, but only saw it from the bus windows. I can vouch for Heidelberg as a great day trip; we really liked it there. You're also driving distance to Baden Baden, which I enjoyed as well.
  • Hi there, my FI and lived in Mannheim before our move to London.  It is a very nice little city.  Def. learn some key German phrases so that you feel comfortable going out on your own.

There is an IKEA there, so if you need to furnish a place that will be pretty cheap, however most apartments actually come furnished.

You don't have to be married to be in Germany, like the previous poster said, just register as a partner.
