Re: is this reasonable?

  • Absolutely. My neighbor girl (14) charges $5/hr.

  • Holly and I were just talking about this last night, and I said she should post here and see what the average is. I thought the norm was $10/hr.

  • I would say yes. Personally I think $10/hr is outrageous! I dont make much more than that an hour!

  • My vote is for $10/hour. Most high school juniors I know make more than $8/hour at their every day job.

I make a bit more than that, but honestly, I made $10/hr babysitting 10 years ago. So, I don't think its that crazy.

  • ok, here's my take. I know i'm cheap so i hate paying for a babysitter period. I just hired a 15 year old for $8/hr and i kindof cringed. I will be picking her up and dropping her off. It will be from about 5 til 10ish and the kids will go to bed around 8 since it's a school night. Minimum wage is $7.25 so she is making more than that, cash in hand not having to pay taxes on it, and she is able to hang out, watch tv, eat whatever, etc.

I was paid anywhere from 8-10 bucks an hour in college, not high school. And I never set the price, the parents did. Honestly, in high school, I made $5 an hour and I thought that was a lot. Now the norm is $10? At this rate, by the time my daughter is 15 the rate will be $15/hr!!! This just seems like it's getting out of hand.

Both of my sister's pay $10/hr so I won't even ask girls that they use since I feel like they would be disappointed they aren't getting paid as much.

    Flame away, yes, i'm cheap.

  • $8 for one kid for such a short amount of time is totally reasonable.  I pay at least $10 bc I have 2 high maintenance high energy boys.  And I want my sitter to come back :)

    thanks to jennied :)

  • This is why I'm so grateful we have family here that will sit. I can't imagine going out for dinner and a movie and having to pay almost $40 just to be able to do that! I'm sure I'm cheap too but my take is if they don't like it go to McDonalds and get paid less and have a crappy job :)

  • We are lucky to be able to use family or friends usually, but my MIL was sick and nobody else was available last minute. We ended up paying $50 for 6:30p-1a last night....like a pp, I would rather pay a little more and have the sitter make herself available when we need her, but $10/hr is a little steep for me!
