Anyone familiar with American Exteriors for windows?

Someone from this company knocked on our door a little bit ago saying they were talking to homeowners in our area whose windows look original (that's us... 55yo home). He said they'd cover a "significant" portion of the cost of the windows if we'd agree to put a sign in our yard. I'm not going to kid myself that it's just that simple, but I agreed to let someone call us next week.

Has anyone ever used them for windows? What's their pricing like? We have a few big odd-shaped windows, but most of the rest are what I believe to be a fairly standard 32x62. I'm sure I'll talk myself out of this (which is probably smart...), but we really need new windows, so I just might entertain their phone call next week.

Re: Anyone familiar with American Exteriors for windows?

  • we had someone do that last year I think.  the pricing is competitive for middle line windows.  but they only have limited options, only vinyl, only a few colors, etc.  They are very pushy, run the numbers fast, and want you to make a fast decision, etc.  If you've done your homework FIRST, you can make a good decision.  We almost signed a contract with them, but we really wanted wood on some of our windows and wanted to do one company only, so we went with Anderson instead, and we've loved their service.  they were way more expensive than the AE people, but have been a pleasure to work with.  So clean, so professional, very easy to deal with.

  • We had them do a quote for us too. Honestly, the price was outrageous. They quoted us at 20k, but would discount it down to 13k. Jim Kinning is a friend of ours and owns a window/siding business. He quoted us for the same windows at 6k (which including a little discount). But still that's a huge difference! My hubby also did a little research on them and found they don't have great reviews. If you'd like Jim's number, I can get it for ya. His business has great reviews and has great prices :)

  • Wow. I'm guessing your house has about the same number of windows as mine, so that's over a grand a window after the discount. Ridiculous. Glad I posted. Thanks!
  • Oh, and thanks for the offer of the referral. We really aren't budgeted for new windows right now, so I'll pass. I was just intrigued by this offer, but am clearly going to pass now. If we ever get the finances to do some major work around here, I'll hit the board up for references for sure. :)
