I made dough ornaments this morning with the little guy. I followed the recipe and directions on this site:
http://homemadegrits.blogspot.com/2009/12/handmade-christmas-homemade-ornaments.html
I halved the recipe because I just needed three hand print ornaments. The only thing I had to adjust was I added about a tbsp more water to the dough. I used my Kitchenaid mixer to knead the dough, so I just set the kitchen timer for 15 minutes and the mixer do it's thing. Super easy. I made an extra handprint ornament just in case and I made some ornaments for the tree with cookie cutters from the scraps I had.
Here is before the oven:

Here is after the oven:

You can see in the after picture that the hand print in the upper
right corner puffed up so much that you can't really make it out
anymore. I didn't make any pin pricks over the hand print because I
didn't want to be able to see them but I'm thinking you probably need to
do that to make sure it doesn't bubble.
I baked them for about 18 minutes because once I saw it start to bubble, I pulled them out. You can also let these air dry so I figure 18 minutes in the oven and then I'll let them sit until tomorrow before I paint them should be good enough. After the 18 minutes the backs are golden and none of them stuck to the cookie sheet and I just sprayed it with Pam.
Just thought I'd post in case anyone is looking for an easy Christmas craft to do with the kiddos. I'm going to paint the hand prints with a white glittery acrylic paint (so they will hopefully look like snow) and then seal with the acrylic varnish and give them to the grandparents. Then I'm going to let Tommy go to town on the other ones with finger paints and then I guess I'll seal those too.
Re: Pinterest review - ornaments PIP
Aww, they turned out really cute. I like the handprints and even after baking, you can still see the lines of his hands.
I think we are going to do both. Ball ornament for us, baking ornament for family/grandparent gift tags.

My mom and dad did this with us when we were kids, bread-dough ornaments. I have one left, and it always makes me feel happy. Apparently I stole all the good Christmas paint and would only allow my little sister to paint hers with purple and orange.
I was devastated when I lived in London I decided to store my ornaments in our shed and they took on so much humidity and puffed up and fell apart, but my aunt had one, and she put it in a shadow box for me, along with a picture of me in my favorite Christmas outfit ever as a girl.
I hope yours enjoy an equally long and exciting life! minus the dampness, of course.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
That's really sweet. I'm hoping doing stuff like this for my boys will be appreciated when they are older. I lost my dad at 3, so my mom was a big cuckoo when we were younger (and now) so there aren't things like that of my childhood minus some stuff I did in school. DH's mom on the other hand has EVERYTHING from when he was a kid.
