Maybe it wasn't THAT sudden as she was 92. But I just saw her in November and honestly, she was doing amazing as always. She was still exercising and going on trips and sharp as a tack. She held season tickets to the local symphony and basically whenever the bus left her retirement community to go on a trip, she was on it. Apparently she got very dehydrated and by the time they got her to the hospital, she was in renal failure. They put in 3 IV lines trying to get her better. They wanted to do dialysis but did tell her that she might have to continue with it after they got her better. She refused to do it, even though my mom pointed out it could be the difference in her living or her dying. The doctors said they would know soon enough if the IVs were working and if they weren't, she would pass quickly. She did. On her terms, which I know meant a lot to her, as she was always fiercely independent.
She was a really amazing lady, one I came to admire and grow closer to as I have grown older. I wish we had spent more time with her in our November trip (still not happy that my mom forgot to tell me about my great aunt leaving on a trip on Monday) but am so happy I insisted that I go over the night before her trip and we spent a good hour just chatting. I'm also glad that I know Haley's thank-you note and my note got to her before her passing because she would've gotten a big kick out of Haley's letter.
