So, we got our 4th and final shipment of HHG today. This was the stuff, mostly furniture, that had been stored for us 4 years ago when we moved to Japan. It's amazing how something from a storage unit takes 6 months to ship to Hawaii, isn't it? Anyway, the good news is that it's here.
The bad news is that much of it is scratched badly. The large pieces weren't even wrapped, and the smaller pieces, like my dining room chairs, still had the legs exposed. Now, I can do the minor repairs like sanding and staining myself, especially on the solid wood pieces like the chairs, but the others have only a veneer which was badly damaged, and that requires a professional.
So, my question is, will they pay for restoration? My furniture is expensive, and it's older than I am (yay for hand-me-downs!). I can't imagine they'd pay the $$$ for a new dresser, when it's only scratched, but I also think it's in an unacceptable condition as is.
Let's not get into the end table that is completely crushed. I expect full replacement value for that. mfvckers.

Re: grumblesnort... anyone familiar with HHG claims?
I have no experience with these claims but I sure hope the give you some sort of money for the damages they caused. That just seems totally unreasonable that they should get so beat up in the process of moving.
My boss had a piano moved from her childhood home in Hawaii to California and it was in perfect condition when it arrived and it is a PIANO. They are far more difficult to move intact. So it makes no sense that they should have done so much damage to your things.
If it can be repaired then they'll pay to have that done, if they say it can't be then they'll pay to replace it. That's always been the case when we PCSed and the military moved us. They gave us a list of furniture repair people, so whoever we chose off that list is who fixed it if it were repairable. And I don't think it matters how old it is, we still had a lot of old hand me down stuff that got damaged a few years ago in a move and was still taken care.

We are in the process of filing our claim right now. Most of our stuff has scratches, scuffs, and small tears on fabric and we have someone to come and assess the damage next week.
My understanding is that they will either repair the damages if they are able to (fill in scratches with markers and such), and/or offer you a settlement to use it toward repairs on your own. I've been told to never accept their first monetary offer as they really low-ball you.
Our old BC's wife was telling me about their beautiful antique dining table and how she is still fighting with them a year later. The movers drug it down stairs leaving dents and scratches along the whole thing and they offered her $25 to fix it. It seriously looks like someone took a hammer to the one end and dented it every 1/2 inch.
Are you filing a claim on the DPS website? If so, it's a total PITA but don't give up on it because that's what they want you to do!
Unfortunately, yes. They broke our kitchen table into 2 pieces. It is an old table that has 2 leaves that fold down and one of the leaves was ripped right off. Most of our bedroom furniture had huge chunks missing out of the legs. The back of our couch was also loose.
The moving company sent someone to the house to look at everything, gave the company a quote, then they came back and repaired the bedroom furniture (and it looks amazing!). They also put a new back on a dresser that had been broken in the move. They took our table to repair it, and brought it back to us about 3 weeks later. They also refinished the top of it, and it looks beautiful, better than before! Another company took our couch for a weekend and repaired it, it's perfect again. It was a really easy process once they got around to reviewing our claim.
We had some other damage that could not be repaired and they are cutting us a check for that. They are slowwwwwww though. I filed our claim in JULY and we just got the offer for the $$ on the smaller damaged things yesterday. We got our table and couch back in October. Keep on them.
