Taking a baby to a funeral?

We have a funeral to go to--not sure on time, date, location yet--but I'm not sure about taking G. A babysitter is pretty much out of the question (just don't have anyone around here to watch him), so it's either take him with us or I don't go. I would hate to miss the funeral and I want to be there for H, but is it ridiculous to take a 5 month old with us? WDYT?

Re: Taking a baby to a funeral?

  • I don't think it's ridiculous. In fact, my family has always sort of enjoyed having babies around at both visitations and funerals. It's a nice distraction because, sometimes in an intense emotional situation like that, you just need one.
  • I think it's perfectly fine. I agree with 5th, it could be a good distraction from the sadness.

  • We took M to a funeral when she was about 3 months old.  And my kids were all at S's funeral (G was 3 1/2 months old).  I think it is fine.

  • I vote perfectly acceptable.

  • I agree with 5th on all counts. I can't imagine anyone being irritated even if there was crying/babbling.
  • That's what I was thinking, ladies.  Thanks for the reassurance!

  • I think it is just fine!  I just took B to one 2 weeks ago, she moved down the row from lap to lap and burst out laughing once (that was embarrassing).  The one time she got a bit upset I simply got up and walked to the door.  She wasn't the only baby there and definitely wasn't the loudest.
