Clicky Poll: Harry Potter
I was in class the other day and our teacher asked how many people haven't read the Harry Potter books. 2 out of 15 people hadn't read them. I was super surprised that many people had read them!

I was late to the HP party. Book 4 was already out when Amazon had some incredible deal on the (so far) boxed set, so I pulled the trigger. I didn't want to read them because when things are hyped so much I almost always feel disappointed in the real thing. I had plans with friends the night I started the first book and actually came home early in order to read more
. It really did live up to the hype for me.
DH was the same way. I bugged him and bugged him to just try the first book. Once he finally did, he devoured them. He was pissed about the blatant Tolkien rip-offs, but loved them nonetheless.

I'm not a sci-fi or fantasy or "typical" wizard/magic person at all. I have zero interest in them. You couldn't pay me enough to read Lord of the Rings, for example (though I've tried.)
HP magic and wizards is different, though. The fantasy stuff isn't the story---it's a part of the story, but it isn't the story. It's hard to explain, but the kids and adults in HP are regular people---they just happen to be able to do spells. And, while they use magic to get them out of tight spots some times, it's not the main storyline. The main story is about an orphaned boy who lives with his wretched aunt and uncle, but then discovers he gets to go away to this awesome boarding school where he meets his two best friends- the know-it-all daughter of two dentists and the 5th of 6 kids who feels inferior because his family is poor. Together, the three of them face all of the challenges of growing up (like dating, becoming independent, etc.) even though evil is always lurking in the background.
I'd characterize it as a story about friendship with magical elements rather than a story about magic that happens to involve friends, if that makes sense.
Totally this! I have a great disdain for anything sci-fi and really enjoyed HP.
I haven't read any of the books or watched the movies either. I have thought about reading the books a few times, but I always pick something different to read instead.
I think this is a great characterization of the essence of the series. It is much more about friendship and about making the choice to stand up and fight for the good in the world than it is about magic.
my bookshelf!

Agreed. I was a huge skeptic of the series but fell in love with it after the first book. I should re-read them [for the fourth time]...
