Information about wines...
Hi all,
I will keep this simple, I just wanted to know enough information about wine, so that when I go out for dinner I can feel comfortable in ordering a wine. This might sound silly but I have never really been exposed to it, so I generally avoid asking for it at the risk of looking like a dummy.
Can anyone share some absolute basics that will help get me through a dinner?
Any kind of suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Information about wines...
Most people here talk about tv shows/movies/music... I think you may be better off asking this question in Married life, your local board, or something that caters to wider discussions.
(I don't know anything about wine to share.)
Here's a list of basic wine types-

I think you just need to try a few different types to learn what types you like. Is there a local place you could do a wine tasting to get a few samples? If there's not, you could also try the grocery store. Mine sells single serving bottles of Barefoot and Yellowtail (not the best quality but not terrible either).

I know basic information about wine, but typically when I go out to eat, I just ask the waiter to bring me a glass of whatever s/he thinks would make the best pairing with what I'm eating. Sometimes they bring out the sommeiler, other times they just bring me a glass.Typically they describe the wine and pour a small taste so I can make sure that I like it.
I know what I don't like (sweet non-dessert wines, Austrailian sauvingon blancs, super minerally reds - like french cote du rhones), so as long as it's not those, I'll probably be fine. Most places have pretty well edited wine lists.
You could literally pick up Wine for Dummies or check out a basic website, but what would be most helpful is just doing some tasting. Have a wine party with friends - everyone brings a bottle of a single varietal (all pinot noirs, chardonnays, etc) or from bottles from a single region (France, California, Italy). Are there any wine bars or wineries in your area? Some offer flights (three different glasses) or wine tasting.
Basically, you just have to drink stuff and find out what you like. There are no right or wrong answers - just your personal preference.
eta: And there's no shame in not knowing or being a wine novice. People like to help.
Like I just came from my local wine shop - I wanted a gift to bring to a holiday party but had no real idea what to buy. One of the workers pointed me to a perfect sparkling wine that was perfect.
Very obvious spam.
