Moving to Omaha

Hey all,

So my fiance got a new job in Omaha which he is to begin on January 9.  With the short time frame we are trying to find an apartment to rent but there are so many options it is overwhelming. His job is near the intersectin of 120th and Pacific between what google is showing as between Westood and Deer Ridge.

We want to live with a 20 minute commute for his work but have a few other things we'd rather have if we have to choose.  We are coming from Jefferson City, Missouri which only has a population of 40K.  There is lots of green space in the area making it perfect for living with our dog.

We want to live somwhere that allows us to take him out for walks even at night (I don't want to have to be scared of getting robbed or anything).  We also want to keep our rent under $650 so we can save to buy a house in a few years!  Any suggests would be great!

 Thanks

Re: Moving to Omaha

  • I used to live in the Regency Apts on 100th and Pacific (in two different apartments, actually).  They allow dogs, but I can't remember if they rent is what you are looking for.  Pretty sure for the second (larger) apartment we got, it was about $800-$850.  Management sucks and the apartments are older, but they are pretty and of course, there is Regency Lake in your backyard.
  • I think first off you are going to have to narrow it down to what apts will take dogs and are in your price range, then if you give us all locations we can give you the good/bad about them. Omaha is a big city so crime happens everywhere just so you know (granted a lot happens in NE omaha). Don't be fooled by someone saying west is super safe.

This.  There are so many apartments in Omaha, and you can easily get from one end of town to another within twenty minutes.  There are some apartments on 120th and Maple-ish that are nice.  Biltmore and Vanderbuilt, I believe?

Anyways - do a search within your price range that allows pups, and then we should be able to help you out a bit more.  Welcome to Omaha!  :)

  • Welcome!  We're from Missouri, but lived on the west coast before moving to Omaha a few years ago.  We LOVE it here!  I work near that intersection, and that part of town could get a little pricey, but it's very safe.  The commute won't be bad at all because there are several apartment complexes near there that will not require your fiance to use the highways or Dodge Street.

If you're using the 120th & Pacific intersection as a base, I would look north towards Dodge, Blondo, and Maple for apartment complexes.  We don't have pets, so I'm not sure about pet friendly places.  I would think that apartments a little north of that intersection would be more affordable than the apartments east of that area, as that is a more expensive area of town (Regency neighborhood, Westside School District).

Are you coming to town before he begins his job?  We were in a very similar position when DH was offered his job here.  We were here the first week of January for his interview and they wanted him to start mid-February!  We got out an apartment book, circled two complexes and signed a lease at the first place we saw.  In hindsight, I wish we had looked around a little more or asked a few more questions.  This board is very active and there are lots of ladies here to help!

  • We just moved from that area and I can tell you one complex to stay far, far away from. The Pacific Winds complex at 120th and Pacific. Our apartment flooded the beginning of the summer and we got to live in a soggy and smelly apartment for a month before they thought they needed to do anything. They "let" us move into another apartment (we would have switched complexes completely if it weren't for it being both of our crazy seasons) and then wanted to charge us $75 more per month for an identical apartment. Lots of loud neighbors (in both apartments we were in), someone did a hit and run to our car there and the pet clean up is non existent. I could go on and on, but seriously steer clear.

From that area you really can get just about anywhere in 20 min since you're right off of 680 and pretty much 80. I feel like I've looked at every apartment complex that isn't scary. When we moved out here last year we had a similar budget and had to do it in 10 days, but quickly realized that we'd have to change it to not be in completely cruddy apartments (not meaning to offend anyone, just what we saw), to be somewhere that allowed pets and to be in something over 600 sq ft. I'd recommend looking at some of the Broadmoor's complexes http://www.broadmoor.cc . We're in one of their complexes, Harrison Hills and I absolutely love it! So far, it's been the best apartment experience I've had. It takes us about 10 minutes to get back to 120th and Pacific, maybe even less.

Before we moved here, the other one I liked was Autumn Grove. They were clean, fairly spacious and allowed animals. I'm more than happy to help you out and tell you any that you're interested in that we looked at and the highlights and low lights that I remember. I also have a lot of friends in complexes up around 120th and Dodge. Feel free to email me at acl.photo at gmail dot com .
