In-laws and Christmas - vent

DH's family is beyond disfunctional. I really try to stay out of it, and leave all the dealings to him, but I am just flat out pissed this year.

BIL "decides" what everyone should buy MIL & FIL for Christmas every year. And then goes and buys it. This year he decided he was buying MIL a computer, and first told us to just give him our "share" since he already bought it.  Well that's all well and good, except he bought her a machine that costs way more then we can spend for a laptop that has way less to it then he should of. And we don't have $200 to give him for it. So he decides we should buy her a printer and a laptop bag - he was nice enough to let us (meaning me) do our own shopping on that one.

He then decided we should get FIL a Kindle. So MIL went and bought one at the store. Even though they've been divorced for 20 years. And hate each other. AND they paid at least $20 more then ordering from Amazon, plus tax. And I'm supposed to be totally ok with having no involvement in any of this.

I know it's petty, but I love Christmas. Love searching out the perfect gift, and put a ton of effort into finding things that people like and are within our budget. MIL & BIL treating us like we are 10 literally makes my blood boil, and takes every bit of joy out of the holiday for me. And I know it's a DH problem, and I've told him how I feel - but nothing with his horrific train wreck of a family ever changes.

Just needed to vent that out. . . sorry it got long!

  • I would pull the "I'm so sorry, we're both out of work and can't afford it" card.

I'm sorry that you have to deal with them;  that nonsense would make my blood boil, too.

Oh, and that reminds me of when DH's younger brother suggested that we all go in on an ipad for DH's sister's 50th birthday last month - less than a week before the party.  Yeah, he got the "Thanks for thinking to including us, but we already bought SIL's present."

I love when people try to spend other people's money.

  • You're totally right, I really should. . . or more, DH should. I just told him that I was out of the discussion all together. If his crazy, entitled brother wants to take Christmas from me, he can take it all - I'm not dealing with any of it. DH can figure it out all on his own. Pisses me off.

You told me the iPad story - that's totally crazy cakes too. Seriously. What's wrong with these people?!?!?!

    Ditto A.  That's just ridiculous.
