Perms, you know, for your hair.

I have a hair appointment next weekend and I'm seriously considering getting a perm. Not tight curls or anything, but something that's more than a wave but less than a curl.

My hair has long layers and comes down to about the middle of my back.  Do you think it will look alright? I mentioned it to a lady at work the other day and she looked at me like I had two heads. Apparently, perms are out?

Re: Perms, you know, for your hair.

  • Perms are totally out.

But then again, fake hair is still in.. so who cares?

As long as you stay away from the tight rods a la Greg Brady hair, i think it would look nice.

    No Greg Brady hair. Check.

I use a curling iron on my hair every morning to give it some oomph, but by mid-day it just falls flat. I'm hoping that a perm will give it some body and I won't have to spend too much time on it in the morning.

If I hate it, I can always blow it out until it grows out.

  • The perms of the 90s are totally out.

But my hair person was just telling me she's been doing about 1 a week (and not on old ladies) lately--or she was, before she got pregnant.

Have you ever tried hot rollers?  Or a sock bun?

    I'm a blog!

  • The little girl I used to work with had her hair permed, and it was seriously adorable.

If your hair is long, it should be pretty!

My hair won't stay in the damn sock bun no matter what I try. I did try the headband curl thing and my hair looked great for about two hours until it went limp.

  • Do it. It will give you more texture and even if you dont like it at first (more so from being not used to it) you can blow it out until it softens a bit. I think you should go for it.

  • My dad's a hair dresser and a few years ago he refused to do a perm for me. I trust him so I would probably think twice about it.

  • My hair wont stay in a sock bun either.

Have you tried using a flat iron to curl it? I only wash my hair every 2-3 days, and when I use the flat iron to do it it lasts forever. I'm on 3rd day hair right now, and its still curly.

My hair is fine and oily (and really long) so I have to wash it every day or it looks greasy.

That's what I'm leaning towards. I figure it's worth a shot because I've about had it with my hair. It would only take me about 10 minutes to blow it straight if I absolutely hate the curls.

  • I just permed my hair last week. I did it myself but thats the hair stylist in me. Ask for big rods and you will get a nice wave. My hair hangs so straight and flat when it's natural. People in beauty school wouldn't believe that I didn't straighten it at all. I think it can look nice if it's not an overly curly thing. My hair falls just to my shoulder blades. I have a lot more body and style now.

In other words, I say go for it.

When I had a perm, back in the day, I couldn't blow dry it or it would frizz up like a poodle. The stuff they use now may be different though.

A woman I work with got a perm a while back - she rarely wears it curly, she did it more for volume I think. It blows out quite nicely, but seems fuller.
