What will DH want at his cubicle?

Hi ladies,

My DH recently made a career change from teaching to an IT job where he has a cubicle. I went to visit him yesterday, and saw everyone else's decorated cubes, and his is so plain and sad looking. I was thinking that for Christmas I could put together a little package of "cube stuff" for him, but am not sure what to include. What would/could DH want? I was thinking of a lamp, a framed picture, and some nice pens, and some snacks. He only has a 6 month contract there so I don't want to get a ton of stuff, but this job will hopefully lead to other IT jobs where he will also have his own workspace to decorate.

Re: What will DH want at his cubicle?

  • Some of it depends on what they provide.

Mine was decked out. My favorite thing was a foot warmer that doubled as a footrest.

  • I agree with Dr. Loretta.  I would get him a nice footrest.  He could take that with him for another position and it's really nice to put your feet up.

  • A small cube sized refrigerator could be convient if his office permits it.

Here are few other things I have in mind that he may like for his cube:

    Calendar with his favorite hobby/car/animals/etc.

    Clock

    Picture frame of the family

    Jar with his favorite candies

A case of first aid kit (not for decorating purposes, but it can be convient...put in things like tums, anti gas, bandaid, advil, etc.)

If he really wants to decorate his cube, he'd do it. Some men just like to keep their cubicle simple and plain. Its a thoughtful gesture on your part, but do not take it personally if he does not want to decorate.

  • If he'll only be there 6 months, it's likely he won't want anything there... MH's coworkers always had a ton of stuff on their desks, cubes, and offices - but he never kept more than a pen there. He didn't want clutter and personal stuff there, it's not his home and he didn't want to get too comfy. (He was always places long term.)

I'd ask your H what he'd be comfortable schlepping from temp assignment to temp assignment.

Where in the world did you get this?  I need one for my office!

  • I think a picture and some snacks would be good. I heard once that you shouldn't keep more at work than you can pack up and carry out in 5 minutes if the need arises and I've stuck with that.

  • My H has two pictures of us (wedding day and one with our nephew) that I gave him and the rest he did himself. He has a candy/snack container and the rest is just work stuff. He likes it uncluttered.
  • My DH does not have his cube decorated and he's been there 3 1/2 years.  He really does not care to decorate it.  He gets so engrossed in work after he gets there and once 4:30 hits he's done and ready to leave.  He really doesn't care to decorate it and that's just that.   Once we have a LO I'll probably give him a picture frame to put in there but it doens't bother me.  He's only there for 6 months so I woudln't go too crazy.
  • Depending on how comfortable his desk chair is, I bought an extra pad to tie on the seat of mine.  Sitting all day is a pain - literally!

Also, on that note, maybe a back massager that he tie on the back of his chair?  A nice paperweight, any organizing-related such as a place to store thumb-tacks, paperclips, etc., big & easy to read desk calendar, a hook to hang his coat (attach to cube wall), a nice electric adding machine, a mug & variety of teas, coffee pot, etc.

  • Sort of depends on his personality and what he likes. Some people like to decorate, some don't. I don't. I have some mugs and teas and a cereal bowl and silverware set and that is it. I've been at my job for 5 years. I just don't like personal knicknacks on my desk.
  • Oh you are so thoughtful.  I get my husband some fun stuff from this web site:
