WFD?

What are you making for dinner today?

I am thinking about making some pizza.

Re: WFD?

  • We're off to the in laws' for lunch but I seriously hope to be back for dinner. Knowing MIL she'll send us home with leftovers. If not, I'm probably going to have lentils and beer bread from yesterday. Silly DH complained that there's too much onion in both - not my fault your mom doesn't use spices, mister!
  • My MIL never uses spices in her food as well and my DH hates "spicy" food. Spicy food being anything that has flavor to it.

I dont want this puente to end :( I have been getting up at 11. How is the weather in the north. Here it is horrible. Freezing and rain. Yuck!

Hahahaha.  Sounds exactly like my MIL.  Anything with too much pepper is spicy for her!  Luckily I've been able to convert my H into liking some spicy food.  Anyway, the lack of spices used in everyday cooking will never cease to amaze me.

For dinner tonight I'm probably defrosting a stew my mom left frozen for us before she left.  Tomorrow will be fun though as I'm going to try a crockpot ribs recipe I found on Pinterest.

  • eeeeeee! New family photo! Love it! :)

Glad to hear the whole "cooking without anything other than garlic and/or the occasional dash of non-spicy paprika" seems to be nation wide. We'll convert 'em, ladies! I'm just thankful BIL is an adventurous eater.

I don't want the puente to end either, but I'm thankful that Christmas break is just 11 days away. I've been having major voice issues every week (by Friday I'm hoarse) so I really need some serious time off.

As for the weather it's cloudy and chilly here. The house is freezing, but since we're off to the ILs, I won't turn on the heat until we get home. In fact, I think it's time to curl back up in bed with the man since he's always toasty. I think I inherited some freak polar bear gene or something, I'm always freezing.

Yeah, it's pretty funny, but kind of sad because I feel like many dishes could be greatly improved with some spices.  Cocido for one is definitely lacking something...Oh, and I hate paprika so that ruins a lot of things for me!

Glad you like the picture!  We just got it done at Xanadu (the huge mall that has a ski slope in it) yesterday.  It wasn't our plan to get her a picture with Santa, but when we saw him we just had to do it.

  • I love the new family pic! I have been seeing Santa everywhere this year.

How will you celebrate in your house? Will you give gifts from Santa and the Three Kings?

  • First of all I'm back to say WFD has changed.  I am currently making this crockpot recipe I found on Pinterest. http://pinterest.com/pin/247557310736685260/

For Christmas we usually go to a relative's house and for Reyes Magos we go to my ILs house.  Small gifts on Christmas Eve and the bigger gifts from the Kings.  This year we're not doing much for Aurelia since she's so small, but we did buy her a Gusiluz as a Christmas gift since it's DH's nickname for her. When she's swaddled she looks just like one!

What do you do for the holidays?

  • Cocido monta?es (from Cantabria) is great as it is, but I admit you've got to squish the black sausage in to make it taste better.

I just got frustrated after spending two hours on the dang lentils! Seriously man, you wouldn't know there were onions in there if you hadn't have seen one! I think I've given him a hard enough time that he'll eat them now...

You guys have a shopping center that has a ski slope!? Just so you know, I'm wicked jealous of you Madrid nesties...

That looks wicked good. Where did you get a crockpot? Do they call them robots de cocina here?

We'll go to Grandma #1's house for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals. It's a pretty low key affair since SIL and BIL aren't there - they go to BIL's Mom's place.  New Years is a much wilder affair since we're at Grandma #2's house with ALL of MIL's family. Lots of food. Lots of booze. Lots of fireworks. Lots of noise! Reyes we typically do in a txoko with MIL's family. Someone brings one or two main dishes and the bar next to the txoko does the pintxos and provides the booze.

I just weighed myself - just one kilo up since the wedding. Betcha that changes drastically after Christmas! Our first work dinner (with DH's ex-colleagues) is next Friday. Oh boy oh boy!

  • My mom decided I needed a crockpot while she was here and bought one for us from Corte Ingles.  Thank god for my mother!  It's amazing!  What sucks is that it was so expensive.  60 euros for a regular crockpot that only has a low and high setting.  It doesn't even have a timer.  But oh well, it works.  I thought they called them robots de cocina, but that is apparently a more intense thing. This is called an olla de cocci?n lenta.

What is a txoko??  Enlighten me on Basque ways.  I forgot about New Year's.  That's a huge dinner with the ILs as well and we celebrate my and another cousin's birthday at midnight as we are both New Year's birthdays.

Yeah, with the holidays I'm trying not to overeat because I'm almost down to pre-pregnancy weight (it's all settled in my hips and thighs, but I will admit I'm lucky enough to fit in all my pre-pregnancy clothes still).  I don't want to balloon due to eating so much delicious food!

  • Going back to food, do you find that the people here are like afraid of butter? They think it is like evil. I made an apple pie for Thanksgiving and I had to tell them that it didnt have any butter in.

I am going home for XMAS. When I stay here, I usually split it between my house and my MIL's house. There are so many holidays here. I like staying at home because I like  doing my own Christmas traditions. My In-laws are not really big into holidays so sometimes it can be a bit depressing. I prefer to go all out and they prefer low key celebrations.

OMG that is so great. In like one month? Do you have great genes or do you work out?

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Olive oil is God here. No butter. I've cooked with butter only a few times but I sneak it in and DH doesn't know the difference! As for pastries, apple pie with olive oil just doesn't work thank you very much.

A txoko is just basically a gathering place for friends where food is served. I know there's specific gastronomic societies that meet in txokos, but the term can also be used for a street-level lonja where friends get together.

Yeah.  Last night we had corn on the cob and I told H's parents to put butter on it because it's better that way and they refused saying corn is fatty enough on its own.  Apparently corn isn't popular here either.  My FIL said it's what they used to give to livestock to fatten them up so it must be fattening.

Elenetxu: Apparently great genes.  5 days after giving birth I was already in my pre-pregnancy jeans and down to the weight I'm at now.  I'm about 3 kilos more than what I was at when I got pregnant, but that's still roughly 6 kilos from where I'd really like to be as I had gained some weight the year before.  I'm pretty happy where I'm at weight wise though. :)

  • I got some gnocchi to go last night. Got some bone-in chicken breasts that I'm going to use for Tuscan Baked Chicken and Beans.

Update: DH ate the gnocchi! His ears were apparently turned off last night. Grrrr! Well, I have a small loaf of baguette that I can turn in to garlic bread. But he knows he's in trouble.

  • I got some interesting looking steak thingies from the butcher yesterday. He called it steak carpaccio, It's a regular steak filled with parmesan and pine nuts that sat in a marinade (not sure what kind, but it smelled and looked yummy). I'll probably make some tortellini in brodo and a salad and call it a meal!
