Sending Christmas Gifts

How do you handle gifts to family back in the US (or wherever you're from)?  Do you buy gifts where you are and ship them or shop online and have it sent directly to their houses?  If you shop online what sites do you like best?  Is amazon the way to go or are they other good places to find gifts?

This year, yes I know I'm so behind, I'm shopping online and sending them to people's houses.  Hopefully I'm not out of time!

  • I use Amazon.  I just ship the gifts to my parents house and then they hand out the gifts to everyone.

  • I'm a cyber Monday shopper.

I got stuff from amazon for Dad, yvesrocher.com for Mom, the Body Shop for SIL, a toy set for Brother, and something from American Girl for dear sweet niece. Since I have a USAA bank account, I use their Member Shop and get money back. In addition, I ALWAYS search for coupon codes before buying and almost always find something, with the exception of things bought through Amazon.

The problem I'm finding is they get the stuff and open it right up - so much for Christmas!

  • Mostly I ordered things from US websites (Amazon, RedEnvelope.com, etc) and had them shipped to their houses, or to a relative who will spending the holidays with them.  For example, I had gifts for my sister and her husband sent to my parents to wrap since my parents are driving up to my sister's for the holidays.

There are a few things that will we check in our luggage when we travel back home -- mostly stuff from the UK like biscuits and candy,

  • we've usually bought here and send a big package to DH's parents - i like wrapping the gifts and making it a bit personalised. This year we saw DH's sister in Brussels last weekend so we gave everything to her.

At this point, i would just order from Amazon or wherever and ship directly. You should be in plenty of time if you use US sites. Have fun shopping!

  • Since we spent a good chunk of November in Colorado with myparents, I just bought presents way early and left them there. Usually my dad has some annual meeting in Europe the last week of November, in which case I'll just give presents to him to take home. I usually only send a package to my goddaughter with stuff from here (As she was born in NL, so that's fun!).

I used to send packages, but it's just too dang expensive so unless I can send gifts with someone who's visited I always buy online and let them know something is coming and not to open it. It generally works.

I am unfamiliar with this "Swagbucks" of which you speak.  However, I spend a freaking FORTUNE on Amazon.  Can you please enlighten me?  :-)

  • For the past few years I have just bought stuff here and mailed it, but last year it cost me $90 for one small box which is really pretty cost prohibitive. This year I sent only really small light weight things and got away with spending $27 for shipping. I met a woman from England here though and she was telling me how she simply orders from British websites and has them delivered directly now purely because of the shippings costs. I'll admit I may be tempted to do that with USA websites next year.

  • Unless I am heading to the US for Christmas, I order everything off amazon and have it sent directly to the person. It makes it easier for me that they accept international credit cards and its usually free shipping.

  • I order from Canadian sites and the gifts delivered their houses. I regularly order from Chapters.

I have also done restaurant gift cards for places in the recipient's city. My brother has loved these and gets to try out new places.
