How do you refer to the person you're dating?

BF?

SO?

something else?

someone recently told me that boyfriend is not appropriate out of high school, but I don't see what is wrong with it...

Re: How do you refer to the person you're dating?

  • Boyfriend. Saying "man friend" is just creepy. I wish there was a better word (he's mentioned this too).
    This is my siggy.
  • Online= SO

    In real life= Boyfriend

  • My lover

Just kidding... I call him my boyfriend

  • I can't get boyfriend out of my mouth for some reason. I usually just say friend. I can't say fiance either..

  • I say boyfriend, I'm really not sure what else to call him. Handsome guy that I sleep with? Seems like too much information lol. dude that buys me dinner seems too informal.

  • BF... Sometimes if the situation calls for something more "formal" sounding we use fiance... I was once told to refer to him as my life partner or significant other and it didn't matter if it made me sound like a lesbian because boyfriend seems to informal and not serious lol!

PBear your siggy pic makes me laugh!

  • Boyfriend.

    Online, he's the FF (firefighter).

  • I say boyfriend.

But this makes me think of an early episode of Six Feet Under, where Nate introduces Brenda as his girlfriend, and she says, "I prefer the term fvck puppet."  I sometimes think about saying that, just for funsies.

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

    Love that show! Too funny!

  • BF or sometimes I'll introduce him by his name, with no title.
  • Boyfriend.

What other term do you use? SO just seems to formal and hot guy that I like to fvck seems inappropriate.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a hard time saying boyfriend post-divorce. I dont know why it seems weird or foreign to me. I often say "the guy i'm dating" or "seeing" ... those who know me know him by name. Online here I will say SO or BF...

Maybe because I had somebody who I called a husband (even if he didn't act the part) ? I don't know... lol .. I'm just happy to be with my guy now. :) Polar opposite of xh and that's bliss. :)

  • It's not that calling someone my "boyfriend" is weird to me.. It's calling a 45 y/o man my "boy" friend is just a little silly. Manfriend sounds even more ridiculous though.

  • I work at the same place as mine (he works nights, I work days) and so when talking to the select few people who know we are together, I call him "The HPOA" (Hot Piece of @ss) It started out as a joke, he knows it, is not offended and it kind of stuck. I was asked recently how long he would be referred to as the hpoa...and I I don't know, I'm with pp's that bf sounds juvenile.
If you are looking for the love of your life, stop. He will be waiting for you when you start doing things you love.
  • BF when we are together for closer to a full year and living together I wil call him my SO (online).

I call him my BF IRL.

ETA: The older couple that lives next to me are not married, but have been together for 20 years. They call each other "soulmates". With them it is cute cause they are in their 70's. When I met the guy he said this:

"Hello my name is B, welcome to the neighborhood! I live next door with my soulmate D. Let us know if you need anything."

Like I said... cute for them, but weird if you are younger than 70 years old, lol.

  • We need to come up with a new term.  Yeah calling a 45 year old man my boyfriend is ridiculous but I don't see any other better alternative.
