We're home.
Shannon went into surgery this morning at 9, and the doctor came out to tell me that she did great a little before 10. He said that it was a sizeable hernia, and that there was bowel protruding, so he was glad that we had done the surgery today rather than waiting. She was being moved to the recovery room about five minutes later, and he expected her to wake up in about 30 minutes.
Well, she didn't wake up for another 2 hours! I wasn't really worried though, and I think it happened for a reason. There was another child from our church who was having a hernia operation in the timeslot right after Shannon. After seeing her son be wheeled away, the mom was visibly upset when she returned to the waiting room, right about the time that I had expected Shannon to wake up.
I went and sat with the mom, and talked with her. She said she was amazed at how calm I was, when she was a bundle of nervous energy. I told her that there was a reason the surgeries were back-to-back like that, and it was clear that she needed me. After sitting and chatting with her for more than an hour, her husband came in, and then the doctor (same surgeon that Shannon had) came and gave them the good news. Their son's hernia was not as bad as they had anticipated, and the surgery was a complete success! 10 minutes later, Shannon woke up and I was able to be with her in the recovery room. She woke up really well, she was just super tired... probably because I had to wake her up this morning to get her to the hospital for our check-in time!
The only thing that really got me teary-eyed was when Shannon told me what she had remembered doing. She said, "I was running in a dark, dark place. But, I wasn't scared because you were holding my hand, Mom!" I choked up right then and there, but told her that I would always hold her hand.
She took about another hour before she was alert enough to get dressed and she was discharged at 1pm. Brian just went to pick up her pain meds prescription and she is now sitting on the couch, playing a game and snuggling with me. Her bellybutton hurts when she moves, so we're helping her to shift and keep comfortable.
Thank you for thinking about us. I'm sure her recovery will be great, and she'll have a perfect little bellybutton once it heals fully! ![]()
