Freecycle - your experiences?

I love using Freecycle to get rid of items that I don't want, but are too good to just throw away. People will take almost anything when it's free! But man, when you offer up something that is legitimately good, you get a ridiculous number of requests. I am overwhelmed. I offered some items less than an hour ago, and I already have 30+ requests for them. Now I'm waiting for my "Taken" post to go up so people will stop emailing me about them.

I want to try to Freecycle a piece of furniture, but this would be my first time Freecycling something large. I always do porck pick-up with smaller items. Has anyone Freecycled something large, and how did it work? I'm also not opposed to just taking it down to the curb and putting a sign on it that says "free table," but I don't know if my street gets enough traffic for that to work.

Re: Freecycle - your experiences?

  • I've freecycled a couch & a heavy, metal porch swing.

I just scheduled pickup when my husband (to help move it, if needed) and myself were home.

Same for us when I freecycled furniture.  I also specified in the posting when I would be available to give it away and that it would not be available at other times.

  • Oh, I've also found it helpful to specify the dimensions of the item & whether or not it will break down further.

I had kind of a laughable pick up of our old IKEA dining room table that could have been prevented if I was more specific (or, they had gone to IKEA's website).

  • you should also mention in your post that the person may need a large vehicle to pick up this item or that it's heavy, etc

  • If you are able to put it outside, I'd do that and treat it just like any other porch pick-up.  I don't like the idea of someone coming in my house, and plus I don't trust them carrying something downstairs, etc. and not denting a wall.  So I would put it out on my own and tell them it's outside after whatever o'clock.

I think this is what I'm going to do. We can get it out of the house/down the stairs ourselves and just leave it for someone.

  • I've only freecycled once, and it was a queen size bed frame and headboard/footboard.  We brought it out to our car port and just met the guy outside during an arranged time.
