Got my Christmas present early

It was totally a spur of the moment thing.  I had looked into DSLRs a year or two ago and was ready to buy the Nikon D5000 but ended up spending the money on something else instead.  Yesterday I broke down and got the Nikon D3100.  I was tempted to buy an extra lens but decided I'd better play with it and figure out what I really want first (I'm thinking 50mm or 35mm f/1.8).  I read the manual and played with the camera a bit yesterday.  Whew, there is a lot to learn (which is what kind of intimidated me from the get go) but I am ready to figure this baby out.

What sites do you ladies with DSLRs reference to learn about taking pics and about the use of the camera in general?  Did you buy a book?

  • Kasi, I'll email you the PDF's of the Two Peas 12-week photography challenge. I don't think it's online anymore, and it was a great tutorial for learning the basics of photography. Each week covers a different beginner aspect, like aperture, flash and exposure.

Understanding Exposure is a great read, and I enjoyed DSLR Photography for Dummies (although I think you can get it in model-specific versions too).

  • Ditto Amanda. I did the Two Peas lessons first and they got me to shoot out of auto without intimidating me. I also have Understanding Exposure, but haven't read it yet.  I also got the Dummies book for my camera and that's what I'm reading through now. Have fun!
