my family apparently thinks I'm making the kid a girl

I got Tommy a kitchen for Christmas.  He plays with the one at my friend's house and likes it.  He loves being in the kitchen with me and I just thought he'd really like one.  I have been getting a lot of questions from family along the lines of...you seriously got him a kitchen...or my other favorite, why didn't you get him a work bench?  Really?

  • milo is getting a stove top for christmas. i thought he was a little young but he likes the grocery stuff at whole foods and my nieces' full play kitchen.

but you know i am into gender neutral buying. milo is just my first offspring so when we buy we buy w/ all future kids in thought. we liked this stove top because it is moveable, for now it will rest on our bookshelf at milo level.  and we will store food and stuff underneath in baskets.

this is the one i bought, i scored it for $24 on amazon, and then i bought food and stuff on ebay for it:

p.s. milo is also getting a "Doll" for christmas. it is really more stuffed animal (human) then doll but i think dolls are a great way to teach kids.

I'm prepared to be flamed for this but Tommy has a babydoll.  It was just a little 5 dollar one but he loves babies so much every time he saw one at the store he would scream BABY and reach out for them.  He loves that doll.

Drew got the Ikea stuffed doll for when Tommy was born and he's getting a kitchen for Christmas too.

I got the side eye from my husband when I said he was getting a kitchen from Santa. Initially I thought it was because he was getting a large toy then realized he gave me that look because it was a "girl toy" I was luck, uh I could list like 5 famous chefs that are male in like 10 seconds....

  • my husband shot me eyes over the doll but got over it quickly. `
  • People need to learn that dolls are great for them to learn body parts -- it's not all about dressing them up in pink tutus. :) Oliver loves his "baby."

We're also getting him a kitchen for Christmas. I think we've settled on the Ikea one unless I find some amazing sale in the next week.

  • it would have gone completely over my head on the gender lines until someone mentioned "a workbench instead".  i guess we are a pretty gender neutral family when it comes to that.  ds can have whatever he wants without regard to the target demographic when it comes to sex.

you could always say that he thinks he is named after tom colicchio and really wanted a ge monogram kitchen from top chef for christmas.

FYI the plan toys kitchen is on sale on land of nod at the moment i think they are 147 per part. i know that is pricey but i love plan toys stuff.

We were going to get the IKEA kitchen but then I found this one and really liked it

Then I ended up ditching both ideas because we saw a FP one that was blue (it is actually hard finding boyish or gender neutral ones that aren't ugly) and had sounds for all the parts of the kitchen and Tommy really likes toys that are interactive like that so we ended up with that one.

  • Jonathan got a kitchen two years ago for Christmas, DH wasn't thrilled at first but he got over it. I actually have it set up in my kitchen so we can cook together, he still plays with it to this day.

This is the one we have, I like it because it is compact and the colors are unisex. I bought him the stainless steel pots and pans from Ikea though because he knows the plastic ones arent real and he still insisted on using my stuff at first

  • Thanks Shannon --- I like that educo one! I may consider this one instead.

Lachute, I'll check out Land of Nod too. We don't want to spend more than $150 though.

  • My 3 y/o nephew has a kitchen and he loves it. The relatives we thought would take issue with it, didn?t. He really enjoys it and he likes helping my mom and sister in the kitchen. I bought him this for Christmas for his kitchen. I hope he likes it.

That's when I got really irritated.  I'm not out buying him tutus or Barbies.  It's a kitchen!  I just don't see why people think it's more important that a boy gets tools and a girl gets the kitchen stuff.

FWIW, when I was a little girl I had every large metal Tonka truck they made because I loved them.  I'm glad my parents were not foolish enough to not get them for me because they are considered "boy's toys."  I was just surprised that they were taken aback that I was getting him a kitchen because I guess in their head it's ok for a girl to be a tomboy but not for a boy to like a kitchen???

  • it's a tragedy that we gender shame. its also sad that 'girl' things are looked as so unacceptable, but its fine if a girl has a 'boy' thing.

    we pink shame too much.

dup, but I'll add we liked that one because it had a microwave, sink, oven, and fridge with it but is pretty small as space is limited here.

We did get Drew a workbench too, but that was for his birthday (the 21st)

I do foresee him playing more with the kitchen set though and i hope to find a place for it in our kitchen so he can cook when I do.

  • I think that's ridiculous about Tommy and the play kitchen.  Who cares?

Apparently it's the Christmas of the play kitchens.  We are getting Emma one too.  We don't have a lot of extra room so we ended up with this one: http://tinyurl.com/bl4o8ln

We got it for about $50 on black friday.  I like that it's neutral and I like step2 stuff.  My parents are getting her the matching table and two little chairs.

  • When Andrew was 3, he asked for a hot pink Carebear. Had to be the pink one. DH wasn't having it and I couldn't find it and was so upset about it. My Dad came on Christmas and he found it and gave it to him. The kid was over the moon. Carried that hot pink carebear all over the place. People said things, but I didn't care and either did the husband after we saw how happy it made him.

I was going to get Chase a kitchen last year, but figured I would wait until this year so that Bella could enjoy it too.

LOL My 3 roommates from college have kids between one and two and each of them are getting a kitchen too. We were all together yesterday and were like what did you get your kid? a kitchen, a kitchen, a kitchen, a kitchen.......... lol

  • Hah!  we got a grill this year, because it was small enough to fit in the space I wanted in the kitchen, and I couldn't find a play kitchen small enough.  But I always feel the need to tell people "I really wanted a kitchen!"

  • I honestly don't think it matters but I remember when Hunter was little, DH kept shooting the idea down quick. Hunter really wanted one but at the time we were also still living with my parents and his stuff was already taking over the house as it was.

I had a kitchen when I was little and I also had a fruit stand/super market one. I swear, some of my favorite memories from when I was little were from the kitchen and fruit stand. I would play with them for hours.
