We are moving to Houston!

DH got the job! I am scheduled to teach classes at my studio through Christmas Eve, so we will be coming down to apartment/house hunt this week and then moving a few days after Christmas.

A big thank you to those of you who had ideas on where to look (I am open to specific recommendations if you have any) and I hope to meet some of you in the new year!

Re: We are moving to Houston!

  • There is a great community in DFW called Austin Ranch (a masterplanned community with apartments, houses, shops, lots of community events). Is there anything like that in Houston in the areas we should be looking at? I won't know anyone and it would be nice to have built in, nearby activities to participate in.
  • Congratulations!

There are a lot of great communities out that way, but if you like that kinda master-planned, mixed-use, everything close-type feel in the southwest part of Houston, you might want to check out the area around Sugar Land Town Square. I think SLTS is actually a commercial development. However, there is a lot going on in that area, so there will be some great options around the vicinity.

Best of luck in your search!

  • I would also highly suggest looking in the area around CityCentre. I am certain there is a variety of residential types to choose from in that area, and again there is some lifestyle variety (shopping, restaurants, etc). City Centre is located at I-10 and the Beltway on the west side of Houston, so access to and from most parts of Houston would be ner ideal.

There is also a Lifetime Fitness right there, so you would be able to teach there if they have an opening.

  • Congrats!

Where will your DH be working? This makes a differene because Houston is very spread out.

HAR.com is a great website when you start house hunting.

  • City Centre is also the first thing that popped into my head, but it really depends on where your H's job is since Houston is so sprawling. Maybe you mentioned it in a previous post that I missed. Congrats on the move and let us know if you have any more questions!

  • Thanks for all the responses ladies and sorry it took so long for me to get back on! I have been teaching all day and then trying to apartment hunt. DH will be working for Infosys and I know the office is in the 77072 zip code. Right now I am looking in 77077, 77079 and Sugarland for apartments.

Do any of you practice yoga and have recommendations on studios?
  • I don't have any input--I just wanted to say how much I love your screen name!

  • page rayskit for a yoga recommendation.  She has a studio she loves.

City Centre is not far from those zip codes so you should definitely check it out.

  • I live in the Heights (77009) but I think I remember your other post saying you wanted more suburban. While we have the whole "small town in the big city" thing going on, it's definitely more urban- best comparison would be to Lakewood area of Dallas.

Anyway, I go to a number of studios around this area. To paraphrase my husband, you can't swing a cat in the Heights without hitting a yoga studio. Studios I like:

    Happy Belly Studio on Studewood

    Joy Yoga on Washington

Your Body Center on Heights at I10

Heights School of Yoga on Yale

I also do Bikram at their Fountainview location

Other studios and gyms with yoga include:

    Bungalow Fitness on N Main

    Studio Fitness on 19th

Cura Yoga on Spring St (they have 4 studios in Houston)

    Nia Moves on Pecore

These are all in or around the Heights area. Just to throw this out there: the Heights is very centrally located and is an easy commute to almost anywhere in Houston due to the fact that it's less than 10 minutes to any of the major highways from this neighborhood. For a peek in to the area, check out my blog

Zip codes are 77007, 77008, and about 1/2 of 77009. Super family and pet friendly neighborhood!

AWESOME! I will add those zip codes to my list...I think we may have looked at a few in 77009 already. Any under $100/night hotels you would recommend in/near the areas we are looking to live? We will be in Houston Thursday-Sunday to look for an apartment and will be staying at a hotel.

Life is a bit hectic right now as I try to plan the move, so I apologize for slow responses ladies. I do appreciate your help and hope to meet you at a gtg soon!

  • Sienna Plantation is a master planned community and it has apartments as well. Very nice location. Everything is out here
