BWLO: Closet/organizing question

What do you hang up and what goes in drawers?

I'm going through some hand-me-downs and not sure how to organize them. My original thought was "outfits" hang, plain onesies and plain pants that can be mixed and matched go in one drawer, and sleepers/gowns go in a drawer, etc.  But then I wonder if I'm going to want all the cute sleepers hanging up?

Also, we are getting clothes up to 12 months in size.  Would you have them all "out" now, or pack some away already?  Not sure what sizes to keep visible at once.

I have a drawer for socks/gloves/hats right now, but not convinced on what else should go in drawers.  I have more drawer storage than hanging (just one small rail).

Thanks!

Re: BWLO: Closet/organizing question

  • We didn't hang much, mostly dresses. We just put the current size in drawers, next size up in tubs under crib. All the other stuff was in storage.

  • With Nolan, I put everything that would currently fit him in the drawers (so like NB and 0-3 stuff) and everything else was put away in boxes/totes that were labeled with the size.

Until recently (when the clothes are getting bigger!) I always had enough room...

EX: top drawer: rubbermaid container for socks and all onesies (different piles for short sleeve, long sleeve, etc.)

middle drawer: all sleep-wear (gowns, one-pieces, sleep sacks, etc.)

bottom drawer: sets folded together (easier on DH!) and extras like pants

  • We hang all outfits. Her dresser is made up of three drawers: top is diapers and diaper accessories, middle drawer is pajamas, plain onesies (undershirts), socks, tights, etc. Bottom drawer is extra crib sheets, extra changing pad covers, and was burp cloths back in the day.

She also has a cube organizer in her room with a few fabric drawers, one of which held little toys/teething rings, one holds lovies, and up until we moved, the other held bath towels and wash cloths (now we keep those things in her bathroom).

We also have fabric bins that we keep on the top shelf of her closet--three small, two large. One large one keeps clothes that she doesn't fit into yet. The other large one holds blankets. One of the small ones stores hats and swim suits, another one holds bibs (but we're moving those down to the kitchen now) and the third one is empty right now. I think it used to hold receiving blankets.

Hope that helps. You may end up moving things around a few times but you will figure out a system that works for you.

  • For baby girl's room, we have all of her sleepers, gowns, and sleep sacks hanging up since that's what she'll mostly be wearing the first 2 months or so.  I also hung up shirts, jackets, 2 piece outfits and dresses.  We don't have a dresser, just some shelving in the closet so all of the onesies and pants are folded on the shelves.  Socks, hats, and other small things are in cloth storage containers also on the shelves.

I only have nb-6 months hung/folded in the closet right now, but I have a storage bin of 6-12 month clothes on the bottom of the closet for easy access when the time comes.

  • I also think it depends on if your dresser also serves as your changing table. For me it did, and I found it was much easier to have everything right there at my fingers instead of having to choose an outfit from the closet first, etc.

I really struggled with this too, lol.  This is what we did:

Hang: Dresses and clothes that don't fit yet (staging area, basically).

Drawers (6 of them):  Socks (but also hats, bathing suits, tights, etc as her needs have changed and she's grown).

Bottoms:  Pants/shorts - swap out based on weather.

    PJs

Shirts - short/long swap out based on weather

    Heavier tops:  Sweatshirts and sweaters

Bibs, blankies, burp clothes etc etc etc.   All this has is blankies now.

When she was little little I folded "outfits" together, but now I'm not so careful about it and I kind of know what she has and can match it up easily enough.

ETA: Oh, also, FOLDED but in closet were baby towels (gone now!) and washclothes as well as all her sheets, etc.

  • We don't hang anything, just coats.

We have a process similar to Amy's - we have a 5 drawer dresser with all of his clothes in them, the top 3 drawers of clothes are organized by shirts, pants, pj's of all stuff he currently fit in. The last 2 drawers are of things he will soon fit in.

His changing table also has three drawers, that's where we store his sheets, his socks, hats, shoes as well as any additional clothes that he won't fit into for awhile.

If I had a girl, I maybe could see myself hanging more items, like dresses.

  • I only hang dresses and special outfits. For Alex now, we have one drawer of pjs, one drawer for undies/socks/tights, one drawer for tops and one drawer for bottoms. There aren't many "outfits" for her age now.

For baby, top drawer is NB size, which will probably be taken out quickly since Alex never fit into that size. Once those go, I'll put bibs/burpcloths in that drawer, next is sleepers, next outfits, next tops and bottoms on the bottom drawer.

I go to the closet so rarely I forget what I have hanging in there. The unused sizes, I bin them and put them in the attic.

  • Kellen and Tessa share a room/closet. Each of them have their own dresser. In Kellen's dresser we put his socks, underwear, undershirts, tee shirts, jeans, sweats, and pajamas. In Tessa's dresser I put thin pajamas, plain white onesies, onesies with designs on them, and pants. We have two bins on top of her dresser: one for socks and one for tights, hairbows, and headbands. I have bins on the changing table that have Tessa's fleece and footie pajamas, extra bed linens, and their shoes.

We have a Rubbermaid closet system so that we have hanging space and shelves. I only hang Kellen's dress clothes, collared shirts, and jerseys. I also have his folded sweatshirts in the closet. I hang Tessa's dresses, tops with designs on the front, and any outfit that was bought together. I have bins in the closet that have her sweaters, sweatshirts, and tees in them.

DH thinks I am a little too anal about how everything is organized, but when you have kids that share a room it's a necessity.

ETA: I have any clothes that don't fit them yet in bins at the bottom of their closet.

  • Only the clothes he is wearing "now" are out. Everything else is organized by size and stored in the closet. Sweaters and jackets hang, everything else goes in drawers. At newborn stage I had a designated drawer for onsies, pants, and sleepers no matter if they were in an outfit or not. Then my dresser was also the changing table so we kept diapers and lotions etc in top drawers. At this stage he has a drawer for jammies, short sleeve t's, long sleeve, pants.

  • I have more closet than dresser space,so I hang most things.  Outfits, sleepers.  Those little baby hangers with clips are ridiculously expensive.

I have a 6 drawer dresser and have it organized: burp cloths, changing pad covers and changing pad liners; sheets and sheet protectors; swaddles and sleepsacks (but I've started hanging some sleepsacks); hats, socks, baby legs; next size up onesies and sleepers; two sizes up onesies and sleepers.

I have 4 short racks in the closet and have them organized by size - NB, 0-3, 3-6, etc.

In baskets in the closet, I have towels & washcloths, bibs, "medical" supplies (first aid kit, thermometer, baby tylenol, snot sucker, etc.).  Then on a shelf I have the extra blankets.

  • With Mads, I kept out NB, 0-3 & 3 month clothes since I know we'll go through those the fastest. The others are just packed away for the time being.

At first, I hung all of her dresses and outfits, and everything else went in her drawers.  her bureau has 4 drawers - top: socks, hats & plain undershirt type onesies, 2nd: sleeprs, 3rd: long sleeved onesies & pants (mix & match type stuff), and 4th: blankets, etc.

As she's gotten older (and now LIVES for pulling everything out of her drawers), all of her shirts, dresses, hoodies, etc are hanging in her closet because I'm sick of folding them.  She can't really reach her top 2 drawers, so they'll still the same, her 3rd drawer is all of her pants, and the bottom drawer is a mix & match of random clothes that she doesn't really wear/doesn't fit (and whatever other toys/books she finds & throws in there).

ETA: we did try and hang sleepers in the begining because they looked so cute, but I have to admit that after a while, slacker mom kicked in & they often ended up shoved in a drawer (not even folded most of the time)

    Love the honesty.

We're lucky anything gets from the dryer and folding table to the drawers at this point. :)
