I took our Christmas stockings to get embroidered (something I've meant to do for 3 years in a row now). I found the embroidering shop by just doing a google search and I called to see if they could embroider the stockings for me. The person I talked to said yes and to come by any time.
I dropped them off last Thursday and guy working the counter was really weird. He didn't have an actual form for me to fill out and kind of seemed like he had no idea what he was doing, but I thought that maybe he was just kind of awkward...whatever, I wrote down specific instructions, then I paid him and left.
He called today (left me a vmail) to tell me that the stockings were ready but one of them (mine) "didn't make it" but that they would redo it if I brought in another one...no mention of reimbursing me for the cost. When I called back I asked him about reimbursing me for the cost and he sighed really big and said "this is why I don't like working on stuff that we don't sell. when you leave stuff here for us to work on it is at your own risk." and I told him that if he didn't want to embroider the stockings that he should have told me that either when I called to ask about it or when I came into the store. also, that he didn't mention anything to me about not being responsible for damaged items. and he said "well, if you're going to get upset about it, I'll split the cost with you." to which I said "no, you actually need to reimburse me for the whole cost." then he got pissed and told me that he doesn't make any money on this kind of work, that it's not worth his time.
WTF??!! I was being super polite/businesslike the whole time even though this guy was being a total d*ck to me and we left it that he would pay for the stocking. but I'm not clear on if he's going to try to make me pay for another round of embroidering. now I'm really looking forward to going in there tomorrow and I'm not too thrilled about giving him another stocking to potentially f*ck up. but I don't want to go somewhere else because I want them to match. (I know, nice first world problem I have here...boohoo)
I'm almost too amazed by the dickishness of this whole thing to be pissed off. Oh, after I they do my stocking correctly I'll tell you guys the name of the store so you can know not to go there.
Re: local business-wtf? (rant)
These are the kind of stories that make me insane when all you hear is about how mom and pop shops can't make it in this world anymore. Perhaps it isn't always about the big corporate bad guys coming in and driving you out - maybe you just provide really sh*tty service!!
I'm really sorry to hear about your experience. People are so rude and clueless it is amazing. Hope you are able to work it out.
Great reminder that everyone isn't meant to own a business, run a restaurant, etc. There are a lot of aspects to running a business and unless you can embrace them all (and most importantly at least attempt to provide good customer service), then you kind of deserve to fail - JMHO.
That's really nasty
That is insane! First of all, learn how to price your stuff so that you do make money on stuff, even when they don't buy the item to be embrodered.
I hope it goes better when you go into the store!
